Technical Writing Journal Entry 7: Speeches and Presentations ...

Since we've been working in groups towards completing our current lab report assignment, my professor decided to aid us in the proper way of giving presentations and speeches. She touched on a few points that I found particularly interesting especially since I can relate them to the presentations in our own EdLab seminars. For example, when it comes to hand gestures, it is very natural for people to move their hands while speaking. However, too much movement can make a presenter look nervous or even distract the audience from the presentation.

When presenting you want your audience to be focused on the information, not so much on your hands. Proper annunciation is another basic attribute of an effective speaker. You should always speak in a loud clear voice. Even though too much movement can be distracting, too little movement can be very awkward and dull to the audience. For example, many people not experienced with giving presentations tend to shift from side to side in one spot throughout most of their presentation.
This shows the presenter to be uncomfortable or uneasy and this can really impact how effectively the information is transferred to the audience. These were just a few pointers for us to think about when we are presenting our lab reports.
