October auto sales could be at an 8-month high

U.S. auto sales in October are expected to have hit the highest rate in at least eight months, helped by pent-up demand from consumers trading in aging vehicles and a wider selection of Honda and Toyota brand cars and trucks.

Forty-one economists polled by Reuters expect October's seasonally adjusted annualized rate to be around 13.2 million vehicles, up about 9 percent from the year earlier. In September, the sales rate was 13.1 million.

Analysts said October's likely stronger sales were also driven by the greater availability of vehicles made by Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Co. , after the industry recovered from Japan's March earthquake which triggered a shortage of auto parts.

"We think there was some pent-up demand held over from Honda and Toyota die-hards who waited to buy those and in October there was growing inventory," Edmunds.com analyst Michelle Krebs said. Auto sales are an early indicator each month of U.S. consumer demand.

But Krebs added that Honda's rebound could be short-lived after severe flooding in Thailand triggered a shortage of crucial electronic parts.

The flooding will not hit October sales, but it may affect November and December U.S. auto sales, particularly at Honda, analysts said.

Honda withdrew its 2011 financial outlook and cut North American output by half from November 2 to November 10. Honda also pushed back the sales date for its 2012 CR-V crossover, the company's entry in the hot-selling compact SUV market.

"It does seem more severe than we initially thought," Jesse Toprak, Truecar.com analyst, said of the impact of the floods. "Honda has a lot riding on the CR-V and it's a potential constraint in Honda sales for the next several months."

Last week, Ford Motor Co. said it expected its production to fall by 30,000 vehicles due to supply shortages linked to the floods.

Still, overall U.S. sales over the remainder of the year will benefit from both rising used car prices and the increased need to replace aging vehicles, analysts said.

U.S. auto sales have been trending higher since June when the annualized sales rate dipped to 11.6 million vehicles. Better offerings from the likes of General Motors Co. , Chrysler Group LLC and Ford are also boosting sales.

The average vehicle on U.S. roads is almost 11 years old, two years older today than the average in 2007, and at some point those cars will break down and spur new car sales, analysts said.

Used car prices in September were also at their highest level in more than five years, according to a J.P. Morgan October 25 research note.

The fourth quarter of the year is also typically the strongest for pickup truck sales, because of purchases by businesses, Krebs said.

"Everyone's trying to extend the life (of their vehicles), but you can only extend it so far," said Mirko Mikelic, senior portfolio manager with Fifth Third Asset Management. "People are almost forced to swap in for a new vehicle."

Rick Perry Urges New Hampshire To Repeal Gay Marriage Law, Defund Planned Parenthood

Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry, campaigning in New Hampshire Friday, praised legislators in the state for working to repeal the state's same-sex marriage law.

"As conservatives we believe in the sanctity of life. We believe in the sanctity of traditional marriage," Perry said at the annual banquet for Cornerstone Action, a conservative advocacy group. "And I applaud those legislators in New Hampshire who are working to defend marriage as an institution between one man and one woman, realizing that children need to be raised in a loving home by a mother and a father."

In June 2009, New Hampshire became the sixth state to legalize gay marriage. On Top Magazine reported that a bill to repeal New Hampshire's gay marriage law passed a House committee this week.

In his speech on Friday, Perry also praised efforts to defund Planned Parenthood.

"Unfortunately this current administration has since provided one million dollars in federal grant money to Planned Parenthood in direct conflict with this state's policies. And the bottom-line is this: If you want to stop Washington's many violations of the 10th Amendment ... then we must make President Obama a one-term president," Perry said.

In June, New Hampshire's Executive Council voted 3-2 to end the the state's $1.8 million contract with Planned Parenthood. The Obama administration restored the funding in September.

In August, Perry signed a pledge to support a constitutional amendment against gay marriage.

Libyan Islamists urge NTC to stop executions in Iraq (Reuters)

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) ? Libyan Islamists who helped overthrow Muammar Gaddafi urged the country's new leaders Saturday to appeal to Baghdad to halt the execution of Libyans jailed in Iraq.

In a demonstration that drew hundreds of people -- some armed -- to the headquarters of the National Transitional Council (NTC) in Libya's second city of Benghazi, protesters urged the head of the council to intervene in support of some 30 Libyans they say were arrested during the Iraqi insurgency.

"Mustafa Abdel Jalil should tell the Iraqis to immediately stop the scheduled executions, and after this, individual cases should be examined," said Nasr al-Zway, a 40-year-old who said his brother Adel is imprisoned in Iraq.

The protest, which began late Friday after Libyans in Iraq called their families to say two executions would take place Saturday, included former fighters wearing long beards and the families of condemned men, with many holding signs invoking Muslim scripture.

Others carried banners saying "Stop the execution of our brothers in Iraq." One family carried a picture of their son, who went missing in Iraq in 2004, against the backdrop of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.

Libyans from across the country put aside their complex tribal and cultural divisions to oust Gaddafi during eight months of fighting.

But many are now concerned his killing could re-ignite rivalries and mar the path to democracy. Differences between Islamists and secularists add to the regional enmities.

Salem al-Khodary, an engineering student who manned a heavy machine gun during fighting earlier this month, said a variety of Muslims were taking part in the Benghazi protests, which concerned all Libyans and were not based purely on religion.

"Nobody here knows about the trials or how these people were condemned, so it is a question of transparency," he said, adding he felt protesters dressed in fatigues were only armed in a sign of pride at their victory over Gaddafi.

The bearded 22-year-old who described himself as a devout Muslim and also a fan of American actor Johnny Depp and rock band Linkin Park, said demonstrations were a part of the new Libya and he did not expect political conflict to escalate into violence.

"The war is over -- we know the difference between fighting with weapons and acting through politics, with demonstrations and words," he said.

US man gets another 30 days in Aruba tourist case

(AP) ? A U.S. businessman who has been jailed in Aruba for nearly three months as a suspect in the death of his traveling companion must remain in custody for at least 30 more days to give investigators more time to gather and evaluate evidence, a judge on the island ruled Friday.

Aruban prosecutors announced the ruling after a closed hearing on the Dutch Caribbean island. Gary Giordano, a 50-year-old employment agency owner from Gaithersburg, Maryland, has been in jail since Aug. 5, three days after he told police companion Robyn Gardner was swept out to sea while snorkeling.

Authorities have said they believe that the 35-year-old woman is dead and that Giordano was involved. Her body has not been found, and any evidence against Giordano has not been disclosed. He has denied any wrongdoing, while his attorneys have appealed for his immediate release.

"Our client is innocent and there has been a lot of investigation already," attorney Chris Lejuez said in an interview outside court. "There is no evidence, and his life is being destroyed."

Lejuez said that during the hearing prosecutors disclosed that a DNA test confirmed that blood found on a towel came from Gardner. But the attorney said that Giordano has maintained that she cut her toe on a rock while they were on a beach and used the towel to stop the bleeding.

The same judge previously issued a 60-day detention order on Aug. 31. The prosecutor's office said in a statement that investigators needed more time to process additional evidence gathered in recent weeks, including the results of a re-enactment of the couple's snorkeling trip off the southeastern tip of the island.

Investigators are still processing some evidence, including DNA analysis and information gathered from Gardner's and Giordano's computers, and are considering a new search for Gardener's remains, said Solicitor General Taco Stein.

At the end of the new 30-day detention period, Stein said prosecutors would be expected to either bring charges against Giordano or release him. Another extension would require a higher threshold of evidence that would be difficult to obtain under Aruban law, Stein said.

How do you bounce back from this?

Exhausting. Thrilling. Harrowing. Spectacular. One of the reasons I?m having such a hard time writing about Game 6 today is because the adjectives we?ve developed over the thousands of years of human speech are rather insufficient. I?m still reeling myself.

But one question some people have asked me today is how on Earth, after coming within one strike of winning the World Series last night, only to fritter it away on multiple occasions, can the Rangers bounce back? ?My response to that is: what, are you crazy?

Nothing in this World Series has gone as expected. Nothing can be predicted based on the previous game?s results. I would just as soon predict that the Rangers will activate Nolan Ryan and the Cardinals will active Bob Gibson and we?d have an exact reenactment of Game 7 from 1991 than I would predict that the Rangers would be unable to muster the emotional energy necessary to win tonight.

Remember 1986? After Buckner? The Red Sox had a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning in Game 7. ?Yes, they lost, but the ?oh, they?re?devastated? narrative didn?t hold up. ?Tired bullpens, the Mets execution and the Red Sox? lack thereof is what decided that game, not momentum. ?To suggest otherwise is to impose a storyline we want to impose, not to reflect what happened. Or what we can at least accurately ascertain happened.

And so is the case tonight. ?Not having Derek Holland at the ready is going to be a way taller order for the Rangers to overcome than shell shock from Game 6. ?The fact that they?re on the road and that the home team has won the last eight Game sevens will matter more than shell shock too (though that?s not a predictive thing either). ?The Rangers? defense ? if as bad as it was in Game 6 ? will play a huge role too.

But let?s save the drama-spinning for a while, OK?

Weird Metal Thefts in US Driven by Asian Industrial Boom (LiveScience.com)

Consider a fire hydrant. To most people, it has the potential to save lives. Some see a more immediate gain: Its brass nuts can be twisted off and sold for a few cents at the nearest scrap metal shop.

Similarly, some view cemeteries not as sacred resting spots for the dead but as troves of bronze plaques and statues, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and free for the taking. And the historic bell at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco was just 2.7 tons of pure copper to the thieves who stole it from the churchyard last week.

Since the early 2000s, rapid industrialization in Asia and elsewhere has inflated the international demand for scrap metals. This in turn has driven up the metals' value, leading to another trend: More and more Americans seem to be seeing dollar signs where they used to see everyday metal objects.

"It's a delayed effect where, as the price of metal goes up, slowly you begin to see the rise in theft of scrap metal as people begin to recognize that they're able to get more cash for it," said Brandon Kooi, a professor of criminal justice at Aurora University in Chicago. Kooi, who wrote a 2010 report on scrap metal theft for the U.S. Department of Justice, told Life's Little Mysteries he has found a rapid rise in this type of crime nationwide, with some areas seeing double or triple the frequency of a decade ago. "These are crimes of opportunity, in that there is metal everywhere," he said. [Where'd That Bridge Go? The Weirdest Metal Thefts]

Thieves recently made headlines stealing everything from cars' catalytic converters ? which are coated with platinum, palladium and other precious metals worth $200 ? to beer kegs, of which $50 million worth is sold for scrap each year. X-ray films have been pilfered from hospitals because they contain traces of silver. Two brothers were arrested last week in Pennsylvania for allegedly dismantling an entire 50-foot-long steel bridge and selling 15.5 tons of it for $5,000.

Combination of causes

Several factors have combined to drive the upsurge in scrap metal theft in the past few years, Kooi said. For one, industrialization is occurring internationally, especially in China and India. "Because of the massive amount of construction that's happening, there's a need for building supplies. Meanwhile the U.S. has been industrialized for quite some time, which allows our trash to become their gold, so to speak," he said.

The U.S. is the No. 1 exporter of scrap metal, and because of increasing demand, its annual exportation to developing nations tripled from 6 million to 18 million tons between 2002 and 2007. The market value of many metals saw a parallel rise. According to the London Metal Exchange, the price of a pound of copper rose from 65 cents in 2002 to $4 in 2006 (with a slight drop in the years since). [Why Did Gold Become the Best Element for Money?]

Gold, platinum and other precious metals have risen in value amid a financial crisis that lowered investors' confidence in other forms of currency.

Aggravating the problem are the home foreclosures that accompanied the collapse of the housing market in 2008. Copper pipes were increasingly stolen from houses abandoned by homeowners and banks.

Scott Berinato, executive editor of CIO, a security news publication, believes frequent media reports of metal thefts also have contributed to the rise. "Thieves have caught on: There's metal everywhere and much of it is, understandably, unguarded," Berinato wrote in a recent CIO article. "You don't notice how much metal there is for the taking until it starts getting taken."

Although some thefts can be attributed to people made desperate by the economic downturn, Berinato and Kooi say many thefts are linked to drug use. Addicts often require quick access to small amounts of cash and are willing to take huge risks to get it, such as scaling 200-foot-tall utility poles for the few dollars worth of copper at the top, or breaking into high-voltage electrical substations. Though drug use has not increased in recent years in the United States, more drug addicts may have cottoned on to metal theft as a way of making a quick buck, Berinato explained.

Scrap yard solutions

Until recently, there was very little regulation of the metal resale market in the United States, which allowed thieves to find ready buyers. Because of public and political awareness of the burgeoning problem of metal theft, that's changing.

"Clearly the scrap dealers are needed to turn theft into cash, and consequently they become the solution to the problem," Kooi said. "Legislative changes have been made at the state level in many states to get the dealers to become more uniform and standardized in the way they operate."

The president of a scrap metal dealership in the Philadelphian suburbs says he works hard to minimize the amount of stolen goods that move through his facility. "When we see something that is brand new and it makes no sense that it would be scrapped instead of returned to the retailer, we would automatically refuse to buy the material," said Jacob Cohen, president of the Robert K. Kurtz Co. in Trevose, Pa.

"On the other hand, a lot of stuff that comes in could be stolen and you just don't know," Cohen added. "So we follow the state guidelines by ID'ing the sellers and photographing all those items, so that even if we process it and it is stolen, we can match the photograph with an individual and give the authorities the information they need."

He predicted more states will institute such policies. "These are nuisance crimes that are becoming a major issue."

Crime psychology

Scrap metal thefts are crimes of opportunity rather than crimes of passion, and Kooi says the best prevention is to make the opportunities less tempting.

"In virtually every decision we make in life, we use cost/benefit analysis. Clearly, in many locations the benefits of stealing scrap metal have greatly outweighed the perceived costs. As scrap metal dealers manage their organization more effectively, and make it more challenging for thieves to successfully sell metal, we hope that will make the costs greater than the benefits," he said.

Kooi believes ongoing research is needed to monitor whether state regulation of scrap yards is effective in reducing crime rates.

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The excruciating work of inking a deal to contain their two-year debt crisis over, European leaders turned Thursday to a potentially more difficult task: implementing the agreement that asks banks to take on bigger losses on Greece's debts and hopes to boost the region's arsenal against market turmoil.

World stock markets surged Thursday on the news that the leaders had clinched a deal that everyone hopes will keep the currency union from unraveling and prevent the crisis from pushing Europe and much of the developed world back into recession. But analysts were more cautious, noting that the deal remains vague and its success hangs on the details.

In the pre-dawn hours of Thursday, after the deal was unveiled, leaders claimed victory. But by evening, they were cautioning that their work has only begun.

"I think that yesterday we found a good overall package for the next stage, but I think that we still have many more stages to go," German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters in Berlin.

Cracks were already showing not even 24 hours after the deal. In an interview on French television channels TF1 and France-2, President Nicolas Sarkozy defended the deal as necessary to save the eurozone, but took a dig at Greece.

"It was an error" to let Greece join the monetary union in 2001, he said, during the interview aimed at explaining the agreement to the French public.

"Its economy was not ready to take on an integration into the eurozone," he said.

Earlier Thursday, Sarkozy called his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao and pledged to cooperate to revive global growth.

There was no word on whether Beijing might contribute to Europe's bailout fund. Sarkozy said in his interview Thursday night that he would welcome any investment, but that Europe didn't need China to save it.

"The proof is that we saved it without the Chinese," he said.

The fund's chief executive is due to visit Beijing on Friday to talk to potential investors. Beijing has expressed sympathy for the 27-nation European Union, its biggest trading partner, but has yet to commit any cash.

The strategy unveiled after 10 hours of negotiations focused on three key points. These included a significant reduction in Greece's debts, a shoring up of the continent's banks, partially so they could sustain deeper losses on Greek bonds, and a reinforcement of a European bailout fund so it can serve as a euro1 trillion ($1.39 trillion) firewall to prevent larger economies like Italy and Spain from being dragged into the crisis.

After several missed opportunities, hashing out a plan was a success for the 17-nation eurozone, but the strategy's effectiveness will depend on the details, which will have to be finalized in the coming weeks.

"The finer details still appear somewhat sketchy ... but the prospect of a contagion and a disorderly default appear to have been put to one side for the time being," said Michael Hewson, market analyst at CMC Markets. "The only concern is that this post-deal euphoria could well leave investors with a nasty hangover when they start to look at the fine print."

President Barack Obama, who had been pressuring Europe to get its act together in recent weeks, welcomed the plan but pointedly noted that the U.S. was looking forward to its "full development and rapid implementation."

The most difficult piece of the puzzle proved to be Greece, whose debts the leaders vowed to bring down to 120 percent of its GDP by 2020. Under current conditions, they would have ballooned to 180 percent.

To achieve that massive reduction, private creditors like banks will be asked to accept 50 percent losses on the bonds they hold.

The Institute of International Finance, which has been negotiating on behalf of the banks, said it was committed to working out an agreement based on that "haircut," but the challenge now will be to ensure that all private bondholders fall in line.

It said the 50 percent cut equals a contribution of euro100 billion ($139 billion) to a second rescue for Greece, although the eurozone promised to spend some euro30 billion ($42 billion) on guaranteeing the remaining value of the new bonds.

The deal is only the start of negotiations with the banks ? since they cannot be forced to take the losses without triggering the payment of bond insurance and risking greater market turmoil. With many banks struggling to get access to the loans they need to fund their day-to-day operations and the new rules that require them to raise billions of euros in capital, it could be very difficult to persuade them to accept the Greek writedown.

The full program is expected to be finalized by early December and investors are supposed to swap their bonds in January, at which point Greece is likely to become the first euro country ever to be rated at default on its debt.

"We can claim that a new day has come for Greece, and not only for Greece but also for Europe," said Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, whose country's troubles touched off the crisis two years ago. "A burden from the past has gone, so that we can start a new era of development."

Not all Greeks were convinced. Prominent left-wing deputy Dimitris Papadimoulis said the agreement would doom Greeks to a deeper recession.

"We are now locked in a system of continuous austerity, haphazard privatization and continuous supervision by our creditors," he said.

Since May 2010, Greece has been surviving on rescue loans worth euro110 billion ($150 billion) from the 17 countries that use the euro and the International Monetary Fund since it can't afford to borrow money directly from markets.

In July, those creditors agreed to extend another euro109 billion ? but that plan was widely panned as insufficient.

Now, in addition to euro30 billion in bond guarantees, the eurozone leaders and IMF said they will give Greece euro100 billion ($139 billion) in new loans.

With the banks being asked to shoulder more of the burden, though, there were concerns they needed more money in their rainy-day funds to cushion their losses. So European leaders have asked them to raise euro106 billion ($148 billion) by June.

The last piece in the complicated plan was to increase the firepower of the continent's bailout fund to ensure that other countries with troubled economies ? like Italy and Spain ? don't get dragged into the crisis. The third- and fourth-largest economies of the eurozone are too large to be bailed out like the smaller euro nations Greece, Portugal and Ireland have already been.

To that end, the euro440 billion ($610 billion) European Financial Stability Facility will be used to insure part of the potential losses on the debt of wobbly eurozone countries like Italy and Spain, rendering its firepower equivalent to around euro1 trillion ($1.39 trillion).

That should make those countries' bonds more attractive investments and thus lower borrowing costs for their governments.

In addition to acting as a direct insurer of bond issues, the EFSF insurance scheme is also supposed to entice big institutional investors to contribute to a special fund that could be used to buy government bonds but also to help states recapitalize weak banks.

Such outside help may be necessary for Italy and Spain, whose banks were facing some of the biggest capital shortfalls.

Update to U.S. smart grid framework released

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2011) ? An expanded list of standards, new cybersecurity guidance and product testing proposals are among the new elements in an updated roadmap for Smart Grid interoperability released Oct. 26, 2011 for public comment by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards, Release 2.0, builds upon and updates a January 2010 report. NIST's first outline, Release 1.0, laid out an initial plan for transforming the nation's aging electric power system into an interoperable Smart Grid -- a network that will integrate information and communication technologies with a power-delivery infrastructure, enabling two-way flows of energy and communications.

"Making such dramatic changes to the power grid requires an overarching vision of how to accomplish the task, and this updated Framework advances that vision," said NIST's George Arnold, the National Coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability. Because the Smart Grid will be a highly complex system of interacting systems, it is essential that everyone with a stake in the new grid have a common understanding of its major building blocks and how they interrelate, Arnold said. "Utilities, manufacturers, equipment testers and regulators will find essential information in the Framework that was not previously available."

Release 2.0 adds 22 standards, specifications and guidelines to the 75 NIST recommended as immediately applicable to the Smart Grid in the first roadmap. New to the 2.0 version is a chapter on the roles of the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP), an organization created by NIST in November 2009 to provide an open forum for members to collaborate on standards development. More than 700 organizations are now members of the SGIP, which recently made the first six entries into its Catalog of Standards, a technical document for those involved with developing grid-connected devices. Eventually, hundreds of such standards will be entered into the Catalog, which is also described in the SGIP chapter.

Further improvements and additions to the original document include:

  • an expanded view of the architecture of the Smart Grid
  • a number of developments related to ensuring cybersecurity for the Smart Grid, including a Risk Management Framework to provide guidance on security practices;
  • a new framework for testing the conformity of devices and systems to be connected to the Smart Grid -- the Interoperability Process Reference Manual;
  • Information on efforts to coordinate the Smart Grid standards effort for the United States with similar efforts in other parts of the world; and
  • an overview of future areas of work, including electromagnetic disturbance and interference, and improvements to the SGIP processes.

The request for public comment on NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards, Release 2.0, is available from the Federal Register at www.federalregister.gov/articles/2011/10/25/2011-27556/nist-framework-and-roadmap-for-smart-grid-interoperability-standards-release-20-draft-request-for#p-3 and will be open for public comment until 5:00 PM Eastern time on Nov. 25, 2011. Faraway Eris is Pluto's twin

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

In November 2010, the distant dwarf planet Eris passed in front of a faint background star, an event called an occultation. These occurrences are very rare and difficult to observe as the dwarf planet is very distant and small. The next such event involving Eris will not happen until 2013. Occultations provide the most accurate, and often the only, way to measure the shape and size of a distant Solar System body.

The candidate star for the occultation was identified by studying pictures from the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory. The observations were carefully planned and carried out by a team of astronomers from a number of (mainly French, Belgian, Spanish and Brazilian) universities using ? among others ? the TRAPPIST telescope, also at La Silla.

"Observing occultations by the tiny bodies beyond Neptune in the Solar System requires great precision and very careful planning. This is the best way to measure Eris's size, short of actually going there," explains Bruno Sicardy, the lead author.

Observations of the occultation were attempted from 26 locations around the globe on the predicted path of the dwarf planet's shadow ? including several telescopes at amateur observatories, but only two sites were able to observe the event directly, both of them located in Chile. One was at ESO's La Silla Observatory using the TRAPPIST telescope, and the other was located in San Pedro de Atacama and used two telescopes. All three telescopes recorded a sudden drop in brightness as Eris blocked the light of the distant star.

The combined observations from the two Chilean sites indicate that Eris is close to spherical. These measurements should accurately measure its shape and size as long as they are not distorted by the presence of large mountains. Such features are, however, unlikely on such a large icy body.

Eris was identified as a large object in the outer Solar System in 2005. Its discovery was one of the factors that led to the creation of a new class of objects called dwarf planets and the reclassification of Pluto from planet to dwarf planet in 2006. Eris is currently three times further from the Sun than Pluto.

While earlier observations using other methods suggested that Eris was probably about 25% larger than Pluto with an estimated diameter of 3000 kilometres, the new study proves that the two objects are essentially the same size. Eris's newly determined diameter stands at 2326 kilometres, with an accuracy of 12 kilometres. This makes its size better known than that of its closer counterpart Pluto, which has a diameter estimated to be between 2300 and 2400 kilometres. Pluto's diameter is harder to measure because the presence of an atmosphere makes its edge impossible to detect directly by occultations. The motion of Eris's satellite Dysnomia was used to estimate the mass of Eris. It was found to be 27% heavier than Pluto Combined with its diameter, this provided Eris's density, estimated at 2.52 grams per cm^3.

"This density means that Eris is probably a large rocky body covered in a relatively thin mantle of ice," comments Emmanuel Jehin, who contributed to the study.

The surface of Eris was found to be extremely reflective, reflecting 96% of the light that falls on it (a visible albedo of 0.96). This is even brighter than fresh snow on Earth, making Eris one of the most reflective objects in the Solar System, along with Saturn's icy moon Enceladus. The bright surface of Eris is most likely composed of a nitrogen-rich ice mixed with frozen methane ? as indicated by the object's spectrum ? coating the dwarf planet's surface in a thin and very reflective icy layer less than one millimetre thick.

"This layer of ice could result from the dwarf planet's nitrogen or methane atmosphere condensing as frost onto its surface as it moves away from the Sun in its elongated orbit and into an increasingly cold environment," Jehin adds. The ice could then turn back to gas as Eris approaches its closest point to the Sun, at a distance of about 5.7 billion kilometres.

The new results also allow the team to make a new measurement for the surface temperature of the dwarf planet. The estimates suggest a temperature for the surface facing the Sun of -238 Celsius at most, and an even lower value for the night side of Eris.

"It is extraordinary how much we can find out about a small and distant object such as Eris by watching it pass in front of a faint star, using relatively small telescopes. Five years after the creation of the new class of dwarf planets, we are finally really getting to know one of its founding members," concludes Bruno Sicardy.

Quick tortilla chicken soup

Tortilla soup is a one-dish recipe for an easy and healthy weeknight supper.

In the past when I?ve needed a quick soup, I?ve often turned to ramen noodles (subbing chicken broth for the flavoring packet and water). I?ve got a new favorite now, and it?s just about as simple. Tortilla soup makes a fun and healthy (if you don?t overdo the toppings) one-dish weeknight supper. I?ve made a large pot for good reason. Those leftovers make a wonderful instant lunch the next day.

Quick Tortilla Chicken Soup
Serves 6 to 8

Top soup with any or all of the following: grated pepper Jack cheese, diced avocados, light sour cream, chopped fresh cilantro, hot red pepper sauce.

1 pound (2 large) boneless chicken breasts, halved cross-wise to form two thin cutlets
1-1/2 tablespoons olive oil, separated
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 large onion, cut into medium dice
4 large garlic cloves, crushed
2 tablespoons canned chipotle peppers in adobo, minced
2 quarts low-sodium chicken broth
1 can diced tomatoes (fire-roasted if you can find them)
2 cans black beans, not drained
6 ounces tortilla strips
1 lime, cut into eighths

Heat a Dutch oven or soup kettle over medium-high heat. Toss chicken with 1-1/2 teaspoons of the oil, salt, and chili powder to coat. Add chicken to hot pot; cook, turning only once, until impressively brown on both sides, 5 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate and cut (or shred when cool enough to handle) into bite-size pieces.

Heat remaining tablespoon of oil in the hot empty pot; add onions and saute until softened, 4 to 5 minutes. Add garlic and peppers; continue to saut? until fragrant, about a minute longer. Add chicken broth, tomatoes, and black beans. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium low and simmer partially covered and skimming foam as it surfaces, to blend flavors, about 5 minutes.Stir in chicken and turn off heat.

Place a portion of tortilla strips in each bowl, ladle over hot soup, and top as desired, letting each person squirt in a little lime.

Knight enjoys coaching for a night (AP)

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. ? With the NBA lockout still going on, Brandon Knight found a new job on Tuesday.

Nursing a minor ankle sprain, Knight sat out of an exhibition game between former Kentucky and Western Kentucky players but ended up coaching his team.

"It was a really fun experience," said Knight, the eighth overall selection by the Detroit Pistons in the NBA draft. "I had a lot of fun coaching and talking to the guys."

Knight hurt his ankle in a "Big Blue All-Stars" exhibition played Monday as the last event in a nine-game tour against small Kentucky colleges.

The 19-year-old has remained close to Kentucky's fan base since declaring for the draft after the Wildcats' Final Four run last season.

"I'm happy with my decision, and I always will be," he said. "It was the best time to go."

On Tuesday, Knight became increasingly active on the sideline in his "Big Blue" team's 112-97 loss to a "Big Red" team led by Houston Rockets' Courtney Lee and the Utah Jazz's Jeremy Evans.

With seven minutes to go in the fourth ? the blue team trailing by double digits ? Knight started jeering officials over a foul called on former teammate Josh Harrellson, a second-round selection by the New Orleans Hornets.

"I've gotta get this ref's name," he said, as a crowd split between Wildcat blue and Hilltopper red laughed.

The game ended to a standing ovation by red- and blue-clad fans, who swarmed the court afterward for Knight's autograph.

"Tonight was particularly fun just because of the fact that there were less players and all the guys wanted to win," Knight said.

Knight entered Western Kentucky's E.A. Diddle Arena about 25 minutes before tip wearing a sweat shirt and sweat pants. Rather than warm up with a team that included the Rockets' Chuck Hayes, Knight signed autographs courtside.

Lee, a well-traveled player who's played for the Magic, New Jersey Nets and Rockets, led all scorers with 36 points. He plans to play in other such exhibitions, as do other NBA players around the country, until the lockout ends.

"I've got to continue to train, work out every day and be ready," Lee said. "Any time the owners come to an agreement with the players, our season's on."

Ty Rogers, a former Western Kentucky player known for his game-winning shot over Drake in the 2008 NCAA tournament, organized the event.

In Kentucky and Western Kentucky's five-game history, the Wildcats have never played in Bowling Green.

"Before the game when I came in, I told some of the coaches we never got the chance to play UK," said Evans, who's coming off his rookie season with the Jazz. "I guess this was the closest I was going to get."

He won American Idol.

His album debuted at number-one.

He sang the national anthem to open the World Series.

Yes, it's been a very good year for Scotty McCreery, the 17-year old country singing sensation who has now come out with another new music video. This one is based around the track "The Trouble with Girls" and it features Scotty walking the hallways of a fictional high school.

"They're funny," Scotty said of the opposite sex in a recent radio interview. "You just never know what they're thinking, and they never know what we're thinking as guys, but that's what kinda makes that relationship thing and the girls and boys thing pretty cool. So it's kind of like a little puzzle. Like the song says, you've just gotta figure it out sometimes."

Earnings forecasts look less bright (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Prospects for corporate earnings are dimmer in the coming quarters -- even though reports so far this quarter have been relatively bright.

Third-quarter reports among the big names have been reasonably solid, with Google (GOOG.O), McDonald's (MCD.N) and others reporting strong results.

But unless there is a turnaround in the outlook for the U.S. economy, the next few quarters may be less rosy.

Currently, the market is focused on Europe. Hope for a series of summits designed to find a way to solve the growing euro zone debt crisis buoyed the Standard & Poor's 500 index (.SPX) to a 1.1 percent gain for last week and put the index at the top of a recent range it has struggled to break through.

With so much focus on Europe, earnings -- even with most companies beating expectations -- have been given less of the spotlight.

At the same time, S&P 500 earnings forecasts for the fourth and first quarters have come down since the start of October, especially in the materials, energy and financial sectors, according to Thomson Reuters data.

"That's part of this fear factor that has gripped not only the marketplace but corporate America as well," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital in New York.

Much of what's driving worries about earnings is related to expectations for less demand from Europe and other parts of the world, including China, where indicators show growth is slowing.

The sovereign debt crisis in Europe has plagued markets for months, and the U.S. economy has been a worry, too, with the nation's high unemployment rate among the chief problems.

Much of the third-quarter profit strength stems from still-strong international revenue growth, according to a report from Thomson Reuters earnings analyst Jharonne Martis.

"There is still a dichotomy between robust earnings growth and global economic uncertainty," the report said.

Foreign sales total 30 percent on average for S&P 500 companies.

Of the 133 S&P 500 companies that have reported earnings to date, 68 percent have come in above expectations, above the long-term average, the Thomson Reuters data showed.

On this week's earnings agenda are results from more top S&P 500 names: Caterpillar (CAT.N), Coach (COH.N), Boeing (BA.N) and Procter & Gamble Co (PG.N) among others.

The data shows S&P 500 earnings are expected to have risen 14.7 percent in the third quarter from a year ago, compared with an October 3 estimate for 13.1 percent growth.

Projections for the fourth quarter are for growth of 12.5 percent -- down from an October 3 estimate of 15 percent -- and forecasts for the first quarter of 2012 are for growth of 7.6 percent -- down from an October 3 estimate of 10.2 percent.

    WORRIES PRICED IN

Some analysts said the changes in earnings estimates may just be catching up to sentiment already priced into stocks.

If so, an improvement in the outlook would make the forecasts too low.

"If Europe does satisfy the markets (with a solution to the debt crisis), then I think these estimates will be proven wrong," Cardillo said.

As long as the U.S. economy does not fall back into recession, corporations can deliver profit growth, strategists argued.

Among this week's data is a report on U.S. economic growth on Thursday. U.S. gross domestic product likely grew at a 2.5 percent annual rate in the third quarter, according to a Reuters survey, a improvement from 1.3 percent in the second quarter.

"The general macroeconomic data in the U.S. continues to confirm a protracted, slow painful recovery but not a recession at this stage. And if it continues to maintain that however slow pace, on the upside the earnings should be supported by economic activity," said Natalie Trunow, chief investment officer of equities at Calvert Investment Management in Bethesda, Maryland, which manages about $14.8 billion.
