Metcalfe County High School Principal Kelly Bell was furious as she looked at the test. A student answered ?B? to every question, knowing he only needed a C or better to pass the class. Instead, he didn?t even try to pass ? just to spite a teacher he didn?t like.

?This is a highly intelligent young man. But if you do not have relationships with these students, and that teacher has not built the inner love of learning and wanting to be here, they?re going to flunk a test big as Pete. People can say, ?Yada, yada, yada, relationships, culture ? it?s not that big a deal.? It is the missing piece to the puzzle,? the third-year principal said.

Wait, what? Bell?s upset with the teacher, not the student? Melissa Smith, a health sciences teacher, said Bell?s attitude that teachers must build relationships with students to inspire them to do their best has permeated the school.

?You can give these kids everything that they need in that classroom ? the knowledge, the skills, the training ? but when they sit down to take that test, they?ve got to want to perform: one, for the school and, two, for themselves,? she said.

It is that change in attitude and school culture that has seen Metcalfe County High transition from a persistently low-achieving school to more than doubling its college- and career-readiness rate in in just three years, state and local educators said.

In February 2011, KDE secured the Commonwealth Commitment from all districts to increase the college and career readiness rate of their high school graduates by 50 percent between 2010 and 2015.

Jenny Todd, research analyst with the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), studied districts like Metcalfe County that exceeded college- and career-readiness targets the past two years. The department wanted to know how some districts exceeded those annual targets, so they went to Metcalfe County last fall and interviewed district and school administrators, and teachers from all five schools.

Todd said Metcalfe County High shows what schools can do when leaders are willing to make difficult decisions and change a school?s culture.

?They?re really sticking out as a prime example of a Priority School that is doing exceptionally well,? she said.

Todd and teachers at the school all pointed to Bell, the school?s ?firecracker? principal for setting the school on a new path.

?She may have three biological children, but she?s got 400 other kids that she comes to school to every day,? said Anita Love, Advanced Placement (AP) psychology teacher and media specialist.? ?This lady loves every one of these kids.?

Smith said Bell greets every child when they get off the bus and keeps the door open ? even in 10-degree weather ? to create a welcoming environment. Bell makes everyone in the building believe they are a family, Smith said.

?In order for them to want to perform and do their best, they have to believe that they can do it,? Smith said. ?They?re only going to believe people that they love and respect and that they know have love and respect for these kids.?

Bell said the school community may be some students? only family.

?We?re not a prison, we?re a home that people call school. We had graduates that would not leave. They wanted me to promise them that they could come back next year and visit. That?s how kids should feel at their graduation, not ?How fast can I get to my car and make black marks on the road as I leave,?? she said. ?We have teachers that are in that classroom, and every corner of that classroom radiates how they feel about those kids and how they believe in them. You want to talk about rigor, relevance and relationships ? my teachers have it tattooed on their hearts.?

While teachers focus on building positive relationships with students, they also concentrate on their academics, Bell said.

?I have knowledgeable, very highly trained teachers, and we have a formula here that is an intentional plan to teach standards at a proficient and above level, to assess, use the data from those assessments and work individually to make sure each and every student is touched emotionally and academically every day,? she said. ?I have intelligent teachers that not only are really knowledgeable in their content area, they flat out know how to teach it. ?Have you met a lot of smart people that couldn?t teach a dog to bark? My teachers could teach a giraffe to bark.?

But Bell is demanding, requiring teachers to perform ?non-negotiables? that may not be required in other schools.

Whitney Choate, an Algebra 2 and AP Calculus teacher, said teachers must complete a failure-intervention plan every three weeks for students who are not meeting performance expectations and contact parents no fewer than three times until they discuss the plan. Other non-negotiables include submitting lesson plans every Friday, completing pacing guides, giving at least two grades per week, and bringing data from mathematics and reading formative assessments to guided planning meetings.

Love said, ?We have more expectations than any group I?ve ever seen, but they?re all good. That?s our change, that?s been the change in culture.?

An emphasis on reading also has led to the turnaround. Bell said students participate in a 30-minute reading intervention four days per week. Students take Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests three times a year in reading, mathematics, science and language arts, she said. Those performing above grade level attend enrichment, while those reading below grade level choose which teacher they want to work with and what they want to read to improve.

It seems to be working. Students improved their ACT reading scores by 2.5 points in one year, Bell said.

Before the school began its turnaround efforts, students felt they couldn?t excel academically because they were from Metcalfe County, Love said.

?Our kids have taken a different view, because now they think they can do it because they?re from Metcalfe County,? she said. ?That has been the best things to see with these kids ? to believe that they can compete with anybody, and they?re proving that they can.?

Ouya Game Console Owners Not Playing Games - internet TV

The Ouya Kickstarter-funded android based game console has been eagerly awaited by gamers. And since the launch it seems the eagerness has evaporated, as a mere 27% (or less than a third) have paid for a single game.

ouya-games-consoleThe $99 console launched last month is by definition a cheap entry into the console market, and will appeal to those that are fed up with paying $40-60 for a game,? but it would be like buying a new Xbox one and not bothering to buy a game!

Many android games are of the ?freemium? variety, that is you can download a free version and pay if you want extra level or the full version. And of course, the android system makes for a great streaming device and XBMC media platform.

Most early buyers of the fledgling game console have been crowdsource investors, so possible the console is more of a trophy than a working product, and it could be that the second wave of public Ouya buyers may be a little less ?tight?.

Speaking to The Verge CEO of Ouya, Julie Uhrman put on a brave face saying that sales have been, ?better than expected,? and that, ? For 13 of the top 20 games on the system, at least eight percent of free downloads are converted into a paid purchase.?

And pointing to the fact is has literally just been released she said, ?I think there are a lot of social and mobile app developers that would kill for an 8 percent attach rate on a platform that?s 30 days old. These numbers will grow as more gamers pick up consoles and as we attract more developers, and I believe that by the end of the year we?ll see a few developers telling us they?ve made more than a million dollars on Ouya.?

As if the low sales are not bad enough, soon Ouya will have to contend with a rival android console from Google according to the WSJ. They report that the search engine giant are designing and marketing the device themselves following the success of Android which powers over 75% of all smartphones.

Warm weather means early Calif. wine grape harvest

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? There's no such thing as "normal" weather in California wine country, and vineyard operators say this year that truism could mean good news for wine lovers.

After cool temperatures slowed ripening and kept grapes on the vine until fall in recent years, growers in the nation's premier wine region are facing a heat wave that has made for one of the earliest harvests in recent memory.

"It has been a challenging year," said Michael Silacci, winemaker at Opus One in Napa Valley. "But it's shaping up to be an excellent year."

Weather hasn't been this warm across the region since 1997, a year that produced a highly regarded vintage. If the heat continues as expected it could mean fruit-intensive wines from an early and abundant crop.

"We're a full month ahead of 2009, '10 and '11," said Jon Ruel, COO at Trefenthen Vineyards and president of the Napa Valley Grapegrowers.

Dealing with changing weather patterns is part of the art of growing wine grapes, a long dance with the elements to achieve a precise combination of sugar levels and acidity expected from one of California's top commodities, a crop worth $3.2 billion on the vine last year, which created more than $34 billion worth of wine.

To bring in that harvest, growers are accustomed to being flexible. "There's no such thing as a normal year," Ruel said. "And this isn't a normal year."

Growers can remove leaves to let more sunshine hit fruit. They can drop clusters to improve flavors and quicken ripening in cool years. And they constantly monitor forecasts to know when an early shot of water will help get vines through a heat wave.

For this vintage, vineyard operators started picking grapes used to make sparkling wines this month, a move that came toward the end of August last year. And they're watching cabernet, merlot and pinot noir grapes, which are already in veraison, turning red and starting to ripen.

"Everything is moving at a faster pace," said Silacci, of Opus One, the cellar founded in 1979 by the Rothschilds of France and Robert Mondavi as one of the first for ultra-premium wine in the U.S.

Weather changes are a major factor that makes vintages distinctive. In the case of Opus One, the cool 2011 season produced a Bordeaux blend with herbal and fresh fruit notes. The weather was warmer in 2007, producing wines with the flavor of ripe fruit.

"We want every vintage of wine we make to give you a sense of time and place," Silacci said. "We're not making Budweiser, where a customer wants it to taste the same as the last can."

Growers faced an early harvest in 2004 because it was a relatively warm year. But because it was a very light crop, the grapes ripened quickly. This year's crop is much larger, so it won't ripen quite as early, growers say.

"We would worry that if we had a warm year and a low crop level we'd end up with excessive sugar and tannin development and a very early harvest," said Jason Haas of Tablas Creek.

"Higher yields mitigate against excessive sugar and tannins, which is great," he said, mentioning the compound that gives a dry and bitter finish to red wine.

The early harvest raises concern, however, for growers that rely on extended "hang time," the stint grapes spend on the vine. Many winemakers say time on the vine leads to complex flavors and a sense of place, called terroir.

In Lodi, Layne Montgomery of m2 makes zinfandel with mature flavors and relies more long hang times. He's planning for harvest three weeks ahead of normal. ("Whatever the hell normal is anymore," Montgomery said.) And the schedule gives him pause.

"I need as much time in the vineyard as we can get to get the great flavors," he said. "It's a little worrisome that things are looking so early."

But Montgomery's syrah grapes come from Amador County in the Sierra Foothills and have not endured as much heat. That vineyard is on a similar schedule to last year. And Haas expects to harvest his Rhone grapes in Paso Robles about a week ahead of last year's season.

If August weather goes as expected, "we should be right in line with what we saw last year," said Haas, who described the 2012 vintage as "excellent."

Updated today at 6:00 AM

ERLANGER, Ky. (AP) ? Toyota says it will add 200 jobs at a manufacturing plant in Indiana as it looks to boost production of its Highlander mid-size SUVs starting next year.

The automaker said Friday that it will invest $30 million into its Princeton, Ind., plant with the goal of increasing production of the SUV.

The company says that will create more than 200 new jobs, boosting employment at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana Inc. to roughly 4,700 workers.

The plant builds a gas version of the Highlander and will begin producing a hybrid version before the end of this year.

In the past 20 months, Toyota has invested about $2 billion in plants in the U.S. and Canada to boost production while adding more than 4,000 jobs.

Google Cloud Print gets Windows compatibility outside of Chrome

Image

It should come as no surprise that Google brought Cloud Print to its own offerings first, but now the service is ready to spread its wings a bit. The company announced today that Cloud Printer is coming to Windows apps like Adobe reader, letting you bypass the necessity for Chrome. Using the driver, you'll be able to see an entry for the service in your usual drop down of networked printers and, if all goes according to plan, print to your heart's content. More info on the offering can be found in the source link below.
