A Wise Woman Builds Her Home: A Mother's Heart: Heart of ...

A Mother?s Heart

To be intentional about cultivating our children?s hearts means we must tend the garden of our own heart. When we allow the Lord to prune the dead branches and cultivate the fruits of the Spirit in our hearts, our actions will begin to reflect the work of the Holy Spirit within us. When we cling to the promises in God?s Word and approach the sacred calling of motherhood with a generational vision, our homemaking efforts will be blessed.

?Our hard work will be redeemed by grace, despite our shortcomings.

When we free up our lives in order to live more intentionally and through the Spirit, the Lord has access to our hearts, and He will prune them so that we bear more fruit. There are many things that we can indulge in or surround ourselves with that would prevent us from bearing fruit. If we strip away that which prevents us from bearing fruit, the Lord can do a work within us.

Tax Relief for Victims of Sandy | Angry Bear - Financial and ...

by Linda Beale

Tax Relief for Victims of Sandy

The IRS released several bulletins this week providing relief for victims of Hurricane Sandy.
IR-2012-83 extends the return filing and tax payment deadline to Feb. 1, 2013 for hurricane? victims in Connecticut (Fairfield, Middlesex, New Haven, and New London Counties; the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribal Nationa within New London County), New Jersey (Atlantic, Bergen, Cape May, Essex, Hudson, MIddlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, and Union) and New York (Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester).? The New Jersey relief starts with the Oct. 26 onset of the storm, while the Connecticut and New York relief start Oct. 27.? The release notes that the relief may be extended to taxpayers in other locations "based on additional damage assessments by FEMA.

The tax relief postpones various tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred starting in late October. As a result, affected individuals and businesses will have until Feb. 1, 2013 to file these returns and pay any taxes due. This includes the fourth quarter individual estimated tax payment, normally due Jan. 15, 2013. It also includes payroll and excise tax returns and accompanying payments for the third and fourth quarters, normally due on Oct. 31, 2012 and Jan. 31, 2013 respectively. It also applies to tax-exempt organizations required to file Form 990 series returns with an original or extended deadline falling during this period.

Penalties and interest that would otherwise apply will not apply, and taxpayers don't have to apply for this basic filing extension.? Failure-to-deposit penalties for deposites due when Sandy struck or later are waived if the deposits are made by Nov. 26, 2012. Details on this are available at disaster relief.??

The IRS also noted that it will work with taxpayers who don't live in the designated areas "but whose books, records or tax professional are located in the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy."? Those taxpayers do need to contact the IRS to claim the relief.? The number to call is 866-562-5227.

IR-2012-84 alerts employers and others that qualified disaster relief payments made by an employer or other person in respect of damage from Hurricane Sandy (which has been designated a "qualified disaster") can be excludible from taxable income and that "employer-sp9onsored private foundations may provide disaster relief to employee-victims in areas affected by the hurricane without affecting their tax-exempt status.
Qualified disaster relief payments include amounts to cover necessary personal, family, living or funeral expenses that were not covered by insurance. They also include expenses to repair or rehabilitate personal residences or repair or replace the contents to the extent that they were not covered by insurance.
IR-2012-86? expands availability of housing for victims of Hurricane Sandy by temporarily waiving the low-income housing tax credit rules that prohibit owners of low-income housing from providing housing to Sandy victims who do not qualify as low-income.

Other assistance through FEMA may be available:
Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster. FEMA has also approved Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) in New York and New Jersey for eligible disaster survivors who have a continuing need for shelter because they are unable to return to their homes for an extended period of time. Individuals and business owners who sustained losses can apply for assistance from FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) via mobile device at m.fema.gov, or online at http://apps.irs.gov/app/scripts/exit.jsp?dest=http://www.disasterassistance.gov/

More information about the low-income housing credit waiver is available in Notice 2012-68.? General information (with links to these and other releases) is available at "Help for Victims of Hurricane Sandy."

Learning a new sense

Monday, November 5, 2012

Rats use a sense that humans don't: whisking. They move their facial whiskers back and forth about eight times a second to locate objects in their environment. Could humans acquire this sense? And if they can, what could understanding the process of adapting to new sensory input tell us about how humans normally sense? At the Weizmann Institute, researchers explored these questions by attaching plastic "whiskers" to the fingers of blindfolded volunteers and asking them to carry out a location task. The findings, which recently appeared in the Journal of Neuroscience, have yielded new insight into the process of sensing, and they may point to new avenues in developing aids for the blind.

The scientific team, including Drs. Avraham Saig and Goren Gordon, and Eldad Assa in the group of Prof. Ehud Ahissar and Dr. Amos Arieli, all of the Neurobiology Department attached a "whisker" ? a 30 cm-long elastic "hair" with position and force sensors on its base ? to the index finger of each hand of a blindfolded subject. Then two poles were placed at arm's distance on either side and slightly to the front of the seated subject, with one a bit farther back than the other. Using just their whiskers, the subjects were challenged to figure out which pole ? left or right ? was the back one. As the experiment continued, the displacement between front and back poles was reduced, up to the point when the subject could no longer distinguish front from back.

On the first day of the experiment, subjects picked up the new sense so well that they could correctly identify a pole that was set back by only eight cm. An analysis of the data revealed that the subjects did this by figuring the spatial information from the sensory timing. That is, moving their bewhiskered hands together, they could determine which pole was the back one because the whisker on that hand made contact earlier.

When they repeated the testing the next day, the researchers discovered that the subjects had improved their whisking skills significantly: The average sensory threshold went down to just three cm, with some being able to sense a displacement of just one cm. Interestingly, the ability of the subjects to sense time differences had not changed over the two days. Rather, they had improved in the motor aspects of their whisking strategies: Slowing down their hand motions ? in effect lengthening the delay time ? enabled them to sense a smaller spatial difference.

Saig: "We know that our senses are linked to muscles, for example ocular and hand muscles. In order to sense the texture of cloth, for example, we move our fingers across it, and to seeing stationary object, our eyes must be in constant motion. In this research, we see that changing our physical movements alone ? without any corresponding change in the sensitivity of our senses ? can be sufficient to sharpen our perception."

Based on the experiments, the scientists created a statistical model to describe how the subjects updated their "world view" as they acquired new sensory information ? up to the point at which they were confident enough to rely on that sense. The model, based on principles of information processing, could explain the number of whisking movements needed to arrive at the correct answer, as well as the pattern of scanning the subjects employed ? a gradual change from long to short movements . With this strategy, the flow of information remains constant. "The experiment was conducted in a controlled manner, which allowed us direct access to all the relevant variables: hand motion, hand-pole contact and the reports of the subjects themselves," says Gordon. "Not only was there a good fit between the theory and the experimental data, we obtained some useful quantitative information on the process of active sensing."

"Both sight and touch are based on arrays of receptors that scan the outside world in an active manner," says Ahissar, "Our findings reveal some new principles of active sensing, and show us that activating a new artificial sense in a 'natural' way can be very efficient." Arieli adds: "Our vision for the future is to help blind people 'see' with their fingers. Small devices that translate video to mechanical stimulation, based on principles of active sensing that are common to vision and touch, could provide an intuitive, easily used sensory aid."

Japan: boulder in the forest

The eight islands of Japan sprang into existence through Divine Intervention.

The first two gods who came into existence were Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto, the Exalted Male and Exalted Female. It was their job to make the land for people to live on.

They went to the bridge between heaven and earth and, using a jewel-encrusted halberd, Izanagi and Izanami churned up the sea into a frothy foam. As salty drips of water fell from the tip of the halberd the first island was formed. Its name was Onogoro.

So far, so good. But when Izanagi and Izanami first met on their island, Izanami spoke to Isanagi without being spoken to first. Since she was the female, and this was improper, their first union created badly-formed offspring who were sent off into the sea in boats.

The next time they met, Izanagi was sure to speak first, ensuring the proper rules were followed, and this time they produced eight children, which became the islands of Japan.

I'm sure you did not fail to miss the significance of this myth for the establishment of Japanese formal society.

At present, Japan is the financial capital of Asia. It has the second largest economy in the world and the largest metropolitan area (Tokyo.)

Technically there are three thousand islands making up the Japanese archipelago. Izanagi and Izanami must have been busy little devils with their jewelled halberd...

Japan's culture is highly technical and organized. Everything sparkles and swooshes on silent, miniaturized mechanisms.

They're a world leader in robotics, and the Japanese have the longest life-expectancy on earth.

NTSB probes copter crash that killed 2 cops

David Tulis / AP

Law enforcement personnel embrace early Sunday as others investigate the scene of an Atlanta Police Department helicopter crash that killed two officers aboard.

By NBC News staff

Updated at 5:09 p.m. ET: Federal aviation officials on Sunday were investigating what caused a police helicopter to crash on a street in northwest Atlanta, killing the two officers aboard.

The officers were using the helicopter to search for a missing 9-year-old boy on Saturday night. Witnesses said the helicopter was flying low and clipped power lines as it crashed to the ground near the intersection of?Martin Luther King Jr. and Hamilton E. Holmes drives, WXIA-TV reported.?

The boy was found safe shortly after the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.?No one on the ground was hurt.

The officers were?identified?Sunday?as?Richard J. Halford, 48, and Shawn A. Smiley, 40.

Records with the Federal Aviation Administration showed the helicopter was a Hughes OH-6A manufactured in 1967, according to The Associated Press. The Hughes has historically been a military workhorse.

A witness, Ravien Walker, told Channel 2 Action News: ?I noticed something falling out of the sky. It hit the power line and it hit the ground. I jumped out of my car and ran because I was really close to it. It could have fell right down on top of my car.?

Another witness, Darryl James, told The Associated Press, ?For that time of night, there was nobody on the street for some odd reason. The helicopter hit in the middle of the street with no traffic.?

Favorite school day memories ? Who Knew? - Loveahappyending

Greetings from sunny Avon Park, Florida!? While other parts of the world are enjoying cooler weather, leaves changing color, and cozying up in sweaters and boots, it?s still almost 90 degrees every day!? I?m ready for summer to be over and fall to get here!? So, this month, I asked my friends at LAHE about their favorite school day memories.

My author page

Jessica Strassner ? I have always loved reading and writing, even back when I was a little kid.? I remember once, maybe in 5th grade, we were given an assignment where we had to write a *short* story using a certain number of our spelling words or something.? I went home and wrote and wrote and wrote.? The next day, the teacher asked some of us to read our stories aloud.? I couldn?t wait to share mine.? All nine pages of it!? I kept going and going and going? The other kids probably thought I was nuts, but the teacher was kind enough to let me finish.

In high school, I took as many creative writing and English classes as I could. ?I also took a study hall period for two semesters and assisted the teachers in the English department.? Again, I received an assignment to write a short story and I overdid it, turning in what I basically told my teacher was the first chapter to a novel that I?d write some day.

Of course, that novel morphed and changed over the years, and kind of grew up along with me, but it was ?Here We Go.?

Nicky Wells ? My favourite school memory goes all the way back to primary school. I remember the smell of the classroom, the feel of the wooden top of my desk (those were the days), and the pictures on the classroom wall. I had a brand new satchel full of colourful pencil and an old-fashioned style mini blackboard (albeit plastic) with chalk for writing on. I adored being given a bunch of books, including my first reading book (called a Fibel). The smell of the fresh print instilled a love for books in me that I carry to this day, surprise!

Primary school was fun. I?d rather not talk about secondary school, LOL. Shall we say I was too successful a student to hang with the in-crowd, and too absorbed in my own little reading dreamworld to hang with the out-and-out-geeks! Sixth form was better again, and learning became fun at that point. Favourite subject? English!!!

?

Lauren Howell ? I guess it makes sense that art and time at the library was my favorite subject! ?I use to go to the library for every study hall too. ?My most?inspiring?teacher was an English professor I had in college. ?I always say she was the reason I stayed four years instead of four, because I took most of her classes!! ?She was amazing and always encouraged me to write and to never compare myself to others. ?Sadly she passed away two years after I graduated. ?One of my other professors at the same school was also very inspiring. ?When I was a junior, I mentioned something about him having to read all my papers and he was shocked that I?d said it. ?He assured me I could write and that he always enjoyed reading my papers. ?That was a real inspiration and I held him in high esteem, so, it really meant a lot! ?I was bullied a lot, so I wasn?t a fan of school until I reached college. ?I loved it and was such a social butterfly and would often hold packed movie nights in my room, making sure to invite all the freshman as well! ?It was completely different than how I?d been in school previous to that. ?I was also very much the class clown?.big surprise there!

Sheryl Browne ? Ooh, my claim to fame!? Arty by nature, I attended Moseley Road Art School, alongside Birmingham?s very own UB40! The school closed down, sadly, the year I left.? No, I didn?t do it!

Anyone who knows me would never believe it, but I was a bit of wallflower as a youngster (I grew ? what can I say? Am now the life and soul of the party. Is why the guests leave early).? So, it came as a complete shock ? to my primary school teacher, as well as to me ? when I was considered talented enough to take the entrance exam to art school. I was totally rubbish at maths but good at art and English. So good, apparently, that my English teacher at Moseley Art ? who famously said he never marked higher than 19/20 ? marked my essay 21+.? When he then went around the class asking us to comment on our essays, I just sat there, cheeks glowing like a set of brake lights, too timid to point out his mistake.? I?ll never forget the smile on his face when I did manage to speak up.? Maybe he was trying to encourage me out of my shell. Soooo? Mr Tenby, you?re to blame!

Sue Johnson ? My favourite school memories are of the teacher I had when I was about seven or eight?who encouraged me to write stories.

She had a wonderful collection of pictures and postcards for us to work from and, for me, they used to generate stories that went on for miles. She?d allow me to carry on while the other kids did artwork or played in the home corner.?It made up for the misery I used to suffer in maths lessons! I was also quite shy, so playtimes used to be difficult.

When I was older, my favourite lessons were English, History and French and I used to score at least 90% in most tests. I once got into trouble following a maths test. One of the questions was about filling a bath with a hole in it and wanting to know how much water would be left in half an hour later. My reply was ?I?d plug the hole before trying to fill the bath.? I only just avoided a detention!

Venus in Libra ? AstroDispatch.com ? Astrology Around The Web

After spending the past few weeks in Virgo?s house of health, service and self-improvement, the goddess of love felt completely rejuvenated. ?Eager to reclaim her title as the most popular goddess, she headed straight into the most sociable sign of the zodiac: ?Libra.

As the mistress of the zodiac?s seventh house of one-to-one relationships, Venus is at home in Libra where her fine manners, ?exquisite taste and unmatched ability to put everyone at ease have earned her a well-deserved reputation as the ?hostess with the mostess.?

While Venus is in Libra, those who are single may find themselves yearning for a romantic partner and ?those who are already attached may crave deeper commitment.

However, since seventh house relationships include professional, as well as adversarial ones, this period can be fortunate for establishing business alliances and mending fences.

Since Venus also presides over Taurus and the second house of self-esteem, she knows that the secret to having successful relationships with others is to first be in a committed loving relationship with oneself, and through her rulership of Libra, she understands the need for balance and boundaries.

While Saturn was in Libra, we were given the opportunity to examine ?and test our relationships so that we could define our partnerships needs and make any necessary changes in our lives, beliefs or habits to help us achieve them.

As Venus makes her way through Libra, she is no longer under Saturn?s watchful eye. ?Rather, the knowledge and insights gained while Saturn was in Libra will serve as the foundation for the lessons we are being asked to learn while Saturn is in Scorpio.

In Libra, Saturn and Venus taught us how to relate to others on an equal but separate level.

In Scorpio, they will teach us how to relate on a far more intimate ? as well as risky ? level.

In the words of Survivor?host and?Scorpio native ?Jeff Probst, ??Drop your buffs. ?You?ve made it to the merge.?

And that?s when the game really begins.

Venus is in Libra from October 28 ? November 21, 2012.

New Jersey Shore, ravaged by Sandy, might never be the same

Sandy, the aurora is rising behind us; the pier lights our carnival life forever.

? Bruce Springsteen

POINT PLEASANT, N.J. ? There were all of 21 homes on the little cul-de-sac. There wasn't much space between them and nobody much cared ? after all, Riviera Court was surrounded on three sides by water, and everybody's "yard" was a dock, a boat and a route to the sea, which seemed like such a nice thing just a week ago.

Lori Rebimbas was at home when Hurricane Sandy arrived with sinister clouds, then shrieking wind. It was the water that chased her out, rising to her knees in 10 minutes. As she drove into the darkness, trees tumbled and electrical wires lashed and sparked behind her.

When she made it back, Rebimbas found that the tidal surge from Bay Head Harbor had flooded her neighbors' homes and crashed through her front door. She stepped inside, onto shattered glass that squished in the carpet. Her bobbed hair fell limp around her face. She lighted a candle in what used to be the living room, and wept.

"I just want a home," she said.

Sandy was 1,000 miles wide and blew through 13 states. Within that immense strike zone, there were places that were shaken, places that were inconvenienced, places that sustained damage and death. Then there were places that may never be the same.

The Jersey Shore had seen its share of bad weather. A winter storm in 1846 wrecked nine ships, and is still known as the Day of Terror. In 1962, a nor'easter washed a Navy destroyer up on the beach in Holgate. But nobody ever saw anything like this, and this time, some aren't sure they can come back.

In Seaside Heights, a roller coaster fell into the ocean, where it remained Saturday, half submerged, undulating above the waves like the skeleton of a slain sea serpent. A tiny '57 Chevy was ripped from an old-timey carnival ride and cast far down the beach. Casino Pier, Funtown Pier, Freeman's Carousel ? all gone.

"We lost everything. Every single thing," said Peter Smith, whose family ran several businesses on the century-old boardwalk.

No one has yet tallied up the damage along the coast, partly because the crisis is still unfolding because of power outages, fuel leaks and gas shortages. But Sandy did not discriminate; it took mansions in Mantoloking, fishermen's cottages in Union Beach, and part of the boardwalk in Atlantic City. The storm, Smith said, grabbed the Shore's heart, "ripped it out and threw it away."

The world thought it knew this place. There was a reality TV show that caught fire a few years back, leaning into Italian American stereotypes and documenting the "Guidos" and "Guidettes" who tanned and drank and brawled. But "Jersey Shore" was not the Jersey Shore.

The Shore was 127 miles of white-sand nostalgia. For almost 150 years, people went "down the shore," leaving crowded, hot cities in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania for boarding houses, second homes and rentals by the cool ocean.

It was a place of miniature golf and fortune tellers, frozen custard and saltwater taffy. Locals poked fun at the visitors ? they called the loud ones "Bennies," an acronym for Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark and New York ? but they appreciated the business. And many of the towns boomed, at least in summer.

This was where a lot of people first saw the sea, or shared their first kiss. There were a lot of churches, and a lot of bars. It was by no means perfect: The Shore had its seedy side, with economic stagnation, corruption scandals, racial tension. Being "timeless" can also mean stuck in a rut.

But there was something, or some place, for everyone. Soldiers stationed up north started skinny dipping at Gunnison Beach in the 1960s; it's now the state's only legal nude beach. In Ocean City, officials banned liquor sales in 1879; that never changed either.

The first Miss America was crowned in Atlantic City in 1921 ? she was 16 and won $100 ? to keep tourists after Labor Day. Nearly half a century later, activists protested the beauty contest by crowning their own pageant winner ? a sheep.

The "Jersey Shore sound" paired Italian accordion with Motown lyricism. By the 1970s the sound had a face. Bruce Springsteen grew up in Freehold, and his second album featured "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)," which is quoted above and was a valentine to the Shore ? and a girl named Sandy. That took on a new meaning last week.

There were beaches for new money, for old money, for no money. The working class owned tiny bungalows built on a grid; the gentry lived in gingerbread Victorians that looked like giant doll houses. No matter your station, nobody looked sideways if you told your "daurghter" to wash the sand off in the "warter."

It wasn't unusual for generations of a family to head to the same stretch of beach, for children to play in the same neon-lighted arcades that once entertained their grandparents.

How to build triads on Agile teams | Surdek Solutions

In my last blog post, I wrote an introduction to triads.? The popular question I got by e-mail from a few readers was: ?Nice idea, but how do I apply this in real life??? As part of my continuing series of articles to support my Tribal Agility talk, I will write about building triads in agile teams this week.? Are you working in an Agile environment with a stage two tribe?? Would you like to use triads to break through collaboration barriers?? To learn more, I invite you to read on.

Agile teams and Tribal Leadership are very compatible with each other.? Lately, I spoke with people in various companies that adopted agile practices and asked them the benefits they were looking for out of agile.? Aside from the usual points of increasing return on investment, speeding up time to market and increasing collaboration, another common sought after benefit was increasing employee engagement on their projects.

You want your Agile teams to be self-organizing and take full ownership of their projects but this can be difficult to achieve.? Speaking with these people in pre-engagement conversations, they mention the need for people taking more ownership of their projects and shortly after, they express how far they feel they are from that goal.? The question I usually ask them at that point is: ?Have you made this clear to them this is what you want??? After hearing their answer, my follow-up question usually is: ?? and how do you react when they make mistakes??

Triads can help you move more rapidly towards achieving the goal of building a self-organizing team and it all begins with how you act as a leader.? As an agile leader, you need to be able to delegate some of your authority to your teams and make empower them to make certain decisions.? You can use delegation poker and delegation boards (from Management 3.0 by Jurgen Apello) to help clarify what you are delegating and who you are delegating the authority to.

Agile teams typically have between five and nine team members which present an opportunity to form multiple triads on a team.? To help you better understand how to build triads, let me tell you a story about Joe, a Scrum Master working with an agile team.

Joe is a Scrum Master and he wants his team to take more ownership of the project.? On his team, he has people from different departments (development, quality assurance and information development) that need to collaborate to deliver features to their customers.? ?Most team members being relatively new to the company, they are not yet comfortable with the existing systems.

After two sprints, he begins to notice the developers rarely speak to the people from the other departments.? He also notices everyone is sitting in their separate cubicles, in different areas of the same floor which he feels is not helping their collaboration issues.

In the following retrospective, he asks the team what are their most painful challenges.? After a long discussion, the team comes up with the following issues:

  • Lack of expertise to tackle incoming support issues
  • Lack of communication between people working on the project
  • Lack of a common understanding of the project vision

Having just come out of the Tribal Leadership Intensive class, Joe begins to wonder if using triads could help overcome some of these challenges on his team.? He decides to suggest some new ideas to his team.

Carrie, the rock star developer, is the person with the most knowledge of the internal systems.? When big problems occur, she is typically the one that will fix the issues no one else wants to get close to.? Joe suggested pairing her with another developer and one of the testers the next time a major support issue comes in. ?The two developers could resolve the coding issue together and the tester would confirm the fix.? This triad would provide the following benefits to the team:

  • Transfer valuable knowledge from Carrie to another developer.
  • Provide a backup for Carrie which eventually should provide her extra time to support the other developers.
  • Allow the tester to gain experience troubleshooting the system

The team decided to try this solution for a few sprints.? Joe asked the team what they wanted to do about the two other issues.? A team member sought more details about the lack of communication in the team.? Jennifer, of the testers, mentioned she did not know what to build her test cases around because the design of the feature kept evolving throughout the sprint.? Seemingly, the developers regularly deliver something different from what she understood in the sprint planning meeting.? This causes her test cases to be wrong which force her to rewrite them and start her testing late which is why she is rarely able to finish her testing in the same sprint.

A team member suggested that Jennifer go visit the developers more often during the sprint but she answered this was sometimes difficult because some of them do not like when she interrupts their work.? She also said she did not always know who owned the feature she was currently testing.? Joe saw the opening he was looking for and asked who felt any ownership over what they were doing on the project.

Some people answered yes while some glanced back at Joe with blank stares.? Joe asked the team what it would take to allow them to feel more ownership of their features.? The team talked about all the features they were working on and how spread thin this made them feel.

The team decided they could be more efficient if they created sub teams that would have ownership of specific features in the sprint.? The team had four developers, two testers, one technical writer, the Product Owner and the Scrum Master.

Joe suggested they try using the three people format they used for the support challenge.? He asked the team how to best spread the talent on the team to allow each team to do the widest variety of work.? The team decided the best solution to start would be teams of two developers and one tester.? These triads would provide the following benefits to the team:

  • Start bringing some collective ownership to the team
  • Allow team members to better focus during the sprint
  • Improve communication between the developers and testers

They were unsure on which team to put the technical writer.? Joe suggested that one member of each team meet with Len, the technical writer, a couple of times a week for one hour.? During these meetings, they should share thoughts and provide updates on the design changes made during the sprint.? This triad would provide the following benefits to the team:

  • Improve the communication between the development efforts and the technical writer
  • Ensure constant sharing of the current vision of the project

To increase the communication, Joe also suggested all team members move closer to one another.? He took actions with the management team to open create a new temporary work environment where everyone could sit with their triads.

At the end of the retrospective, Joe was happy because he started the meeting eager to find ways to set some up on his team and at the end of the meeting, he had four new triads on his team.

The next sprint planning meeting kicked off with excited team members looking forward to working with their new sub teams.? Joe reminded they put triads in place to create a three-person support system where everyone had each others back.? Each triad shared accountability for delivering the right solution and they were also responsible for supporting one another to make that happen.

During the sprint planning meeting, the first part of the meeting with the Product Owner explaining the sprint objectives happened in the same way it always did with all teams members taking part in the discussions.? When the team members were ready to break down the tasks, they agreed on the pieces they wanted to work on, split up in their triads and began identifying the tasks they needed to complete to deliver their feature.

Forming triads to work on the deliverables gave the team a stronger sense of ownership on their work.? They kept the same triads for multiple sprints as they learned how to work together in this way.? Later in the project, the team decided to experiment further by reshuffling the team members and building new triads.

All the communication and collaboration generated by the triadic structure also allowed the team members to more regularly talk about and take ownership the product vision with their Product Owner.? Shared common objectives and goals were driving the team and they began to achieve much more than before.

Conclusion

The above story does not show the growing pains triads go through but the goal was to provide some initial ideas on how you can create some on your teams.? Working with a Stage Two tribe or with Stage Two team members can seriously hinder the progress of creating triads on teams.? ?Once team members get over the learning curve of supporting one another and working as a team, they will start progressing faster more rapidly.

In an organization, triads are an excellent way to get people from different teams to collaborate on initiatives that interest all members.? For example, if an organization wanted to bring in some best practices like automated testing or continuous integration creating triads around these initiatives allows more people to take ownership and work with like-minded people to achieve a common goal.

The key to making triads work in any organization is the existing organizational culture.? Triads will thrive in organizational cultures where collaboration and cultivation rule.? Organizational cultures driven by command and competence will foster a Stage Three environment which will require different kinds of projects to allow triads to thrive.

Keeping it Simple: Halloween 2012- Lego Style!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Halloween last night!? We had a ton of fun!? And now I finally get to show off our costumes that I made.? We went as Legos!? Since I like to do a family theme, I knew that this was something that my boys would agree on and my two younger wouldn?t mind.? Through the process I was really nervous about how they were looking, but in the end I think they turned out pretty good!

Me and my husband.? I just was a girl and my husband was a robber.? By this time, his costume had broken, oops.? For my head I glued on a ton of yarn for the hair and then decorated the body with sparkly vinyl for the necklace.? For my husband I used paint to make the ?beard? and then a beanie for the hat.?

The fire fighter, I love vinyl and how easy it is to use!? I just made a badge for him.? He the top part of his head, I used a bowl and spray painted it yellow.?

The police man.? I did the same thing as my older son?s costume.? He wanted yellow hands, so I spray painted some white gloves because I couldn?t find yellow ones anywhere.?

The yellow Lego.? I just took a square box, cut some holes for his head and arms.? For the circles, I used a cardboard tube that I vinyl in.? I of course had to add the Lego word on each circle.?

The blue Lego, I did the same thing are the yellow one.? This is actually a wipe box, it was perfect size for her.? The circles are also from cardboard tubes that I get vinyl in.

It took a lot of time and patience and a whole lot of spray paint.? Cardboard soaks up the spray paint, so I put a layer of acrylic paint on first and then spray painted it.? I just used clear tape to tape the cardboard together and the hot glue to glue on the circles.?

Wondering how I made the heads?? I took an 8? cardboard tube and cut it to the right lengths and then cut eye holes.? I found it at the home improvement store with the concrete.? That?s what it?s supposed to be used for.? I only needed one for the four of us!

I would love it if you follow along!

West Nile Outbreak Cases Still Growing, But At Slower Pace: CDC

By Marice Richter
DALLAS, Oct 31 (Reuters) - The number of people infected with the mosquito-borne West Nile virus in the United States continues to grow, but the pace of this year's outbreak is slowing, federal health officials said on Wednesday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 4,891 people have contracted the disease, up from 4,725 a week ago. The virus killed four more people in the past week, bringing this year's death toll to 223.
The outbreak appears to be slowing, with 166 new cases reported during the last week, down from 199 the week before, according to CDC data. The week's death toll dropped to four, down from 36 during the previous week.
Just over half the cases reported to the CDC this year have been of the severe nueroinvasive form of the disease, which can cause meningitis and encephalitis. West Nile Fever, the less severe form, causes flu-like symptoms and is rarely lethal.
More than 70 percent of cases have been concentrated in 10 states: Texas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Illinois, South Dakota, Michigan, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Colorado.
Texas has been the hardest hit, accounting for more than a third of all cases, with Dallas-Fort Worth at the center of the outbreak.
According to the latest tally from the Texas Department of State Health Services, 1,718 people in the state have contracted the virus this year, and 78 people have died.
"We're still seeing new cases, but we're seeing the pace slow down quite a bit," said Chris Van Deusen, a spokesman for the Texas Department of State Health Services.
CDC officials said warm weather is a factor in a West Nile outbreak and colder weather suppresses mosquito activity. The worst year for West Nile-related deaths was 2002, when 284 people died as a result of the virus, the CDC said. (Editing by Cynthia Johnston and Stacey Joyce)

Save time with Microsoft Word templates ? Business Management ...

If you frequently write letters to the same few people, having documents that are partially formatted with dropdown menus can save you the hassle of copying and pasting from old documents all the time. Helen Bradley of PCWorld explains how.

???Find Word?s Content Controls. The control panel is accessible only from the Developer Tab, which is disabled by default. To enable it in Word 2010, choose File > Options > Customize Ribbon. In the right panel, locate and click the Developer checkbox and click OK.

???Select a date using the Date Picker Control. This tool creates a space where a date can be entered through just a few mouse clicks. It displays a small calendar where users choose a date into a placeholder. Click the Calendar Icon in the Customize Ribbon, then turn de???sign mode off. The placeholder should pop up in the document, and from there you can format the display.

???Insert pre-formatted text. The text placeholder allows you to insert prewritten messages into documents with ease. The text can be preformatted if you prefer a certain style.

???Create a list of options.?The line item placeholder saves a list of common words, such as ?Dear (Sir, Madam),? for easy accessibility. Simply click Properties, Add, and type an entry for the list. You can format the list so that it cannot be deleted, and the text can be assigned specific styles and titles.

???Create checklists. Click the Check Box Content Control and then click Properties. This can be formatted a number ways, such as a standard check or X inside a box, or some other symbol.

When saving your document with Controls, don?t forget to choose File > Save As > Save as Type, and choose Word Template (*.dotx). There many ways to use the content controls to save time on data-entry tasks, such as memos, fax covers, letters, and so on.
