Yahoo's new CEO finds her chief marketing officer

(AP) ? Yahoo is bringing in a new chief marketing officer as the troubled Internet company tries to burnish its image and revive its revenue growth under recently hired CEO Marissa Mayer.

Kathy Savitt will start working as Yahoo's marketing chief on Sept. 14. Mayer persuaded Savitt to leave Lockerz, an online commerce service that she has been running since 2009.

Savitt, 48, will remain Lockerz' chairman and also will make a personal investment in the company she is leaving behind. Mark Stabingas, Lockerz' chief operating officer, will replace Savitt as the startup's CEO.

The hiring announced Monday is one of the first major pieces in the management team that Mayer is cobbling together to help turn around Yahoo. Mayer, 37, became Yahoo's CEO six weeks ago, ending her 13-year stint as a key executive at Internet search leader Google Inc.

Yahoo, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has been stuck in an extended financial funk that has depressed its stock. Mayer is the fifth CEO in the past five years to attempt a turnaround.

"Yahoo is at an important and unique inflection point in its storied history," Savitt said in a statement.

Before launching Lockerz in 2009, Savitt was a marketing and communications sharpshooter at retailers American Eagle Outfitters Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.

MPs 'must keep green belt pledge'

Building on green belt land "is not the path to lasting economic prosperity", countryside campaigners have warned the government.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England has claimed countryside around English towns and cities is threatened by bids to build about 81,000 homes.

Recent changes to the planning system have prompted concerns that protection for the green belt will be weakened.

A government spokesman said it was committed to protecting green spaces.

The CPRE has suggested that current proposals, which are either out for consultation, submitted for planning permission or have been approved, would cover an area of unspoilt countryside the size of Slough in Berkshire.

?Start Quote

Ministers have consistently maintained that they value the green belt - now is the time to put these words into action?

End Quote Paul Milner Senior planning officer for the CPRE

These plans include the expansion of Birmingham Airport, proposals for three freight terminals, an open cast coal mine in Nottinghamshire and a hotel and golf course in Surrey.

'False promise'

The campaign group added that about 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) of land was earmarked for business parks and housing developments.

CPRE senior planning officer Paul Miner said the government should look to regenerate urban areas rather than build on unspoilt green space.

"It [the green belt] helps regenerate our cities and stops them sprawling into rural areas. As a result no-one is ever too far from true, green English countryside.

"In times of economic slowdown, politicians can sometimes be tempted by the false promise of an easy construction boom. But destroying the countryside is not the path to lasting economic prosperity."

Mr Miner said that "sustainable economic improvement" was only possible by "the sort of urban regeneration that has already done much to rejuvenate many of our largest cities."

"Ministers have consistently maintained that they value the green belt and want to see it protected. Now is the time to put these words into action," he added.

In March 2012, the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) published a new planning framework which included a section ensuring green belt land is protected.

A draft version of the framework was amended to encourage greater development of brownfield sites, following pressure from the CPRE and other countryside campaign groups.

'Green lung'

Ministers said the policy, along with the Localism Act, gave communities a greater say on planning and scrapped "top-down targets".

However, the CPRE warned that the document puts pressure on local authorities to allow building in the green belt to meet housing and expansion targets.

A DCLG spokesman said: "The green belt is an important protection against urban sprawl, providing a 'green lung' around towns and cities.

"The coalition agreement commits the government to safeguarding green belt and other environmental designations, which they have been in the new National Planning Policy Framework.

"The Localism Act allows for the abolition of Regional Spatial Strategies which sought to bulldoze the green belt around 30 towns and cities across the country."

Indians top Yankees, snap 9-game skid

By TOM WITHERS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:08 p.m. ET Aug. 25, 2012

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Streak Buster did it again.

Justin Masterson handled New York's power-packed lineup for 6 2-3 innings and Michael Brantley hit a three-run homer as the Cleveland Indians snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Yankees on Saturday night.

For the second time this month, Masterson (10-11) ended a long skid for the Indians, whose stunning second-half collapse has dropped them from playoff contention. On Aug. 8, Masterson beat Minnesota and stopped Cleveland's 11-game slide, one loss shy of the club record.

"He's our go-to guy whenever we're going through tough times," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "He'll get us out of it. He's our guy."

Brantley homered in the first inning off Hiroki Kuroda (12-9), and the Indians, who were just 3 1/2 games out of first place on July 26, won for only the fifth time in 27 games.

Cleveland is 5-18 in August, a month that has felt like a year.

"It's been rough," said closer Chris Perez, who worked the ninth for his 33rd save. "I've never been through something like this. I was here in 2010, when we were pretty brutal - but we were brutal all year. To go from competing to all of a sudden three weeks later ... it was just a free-fall."

Masterson, roughed up by Oakland in his previous start, allowed one run and seven hits. He walked two, struck out six and worked his way out of a major mess in the sixth, when the Yankees loaded the bases with none out and were a hit away from either tying the game or taking the lead.

"It happens," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "Our guys had pretty good at-bats. We weren't able to get that big hit."

With the victory, the Indians avoided becoming the first team since the Kansas City Royals in 2006 to have two losing streaks of at least 10 games in the same season.

Vinnie Pestano replaced Masterson in the seventh, inheriting two runners with two outs. Pestano walked Robinson Cano to load the bases before breaking Mark Teixeira's bat on a popup.

Perez pitched a perfect ninth, striking out Derek Jeter for the final out.

The colorful closer punctuated the strikeout with a fist pump, and moments later, the Indians lined up in the infield to exchange high-fives and celebrate a rare win.

"It's nice to smile after the game. It's been a rough month, a very rough month," Acta said. "We're looking forward to turning things around and see some of our kids get out there and make some impact on the games we have left."

Despite their fifth loss in six road games, the AL East-leading Yankees remained 3 1/2 games ahead of Tampa Bay, which lost 4-2 to Oakland.

Kuroda gave up Brantley's homer in the first, but shut out Cleveland on just four hits over the next seven innings. It was his fifth career complete game and first loss when going all the way.

Masterson coasted through five innings, allowing just three hits and holding a 3-0 lead.

But the Yankees had him on the ropes in the sixth, when they loaded the bases with none out on two singles and a walk. Teixeira's sacrifice fly to deep center made it 3-1, and Masterson walked Curtis Granderson to refill the bases. However, Masterson got Eric Chavez on a liner to third and right fielder Shin-Soo Choo ran down Russell Martin's drive at the warning track.

As the ball left his bat, Martin thought it would clear Choo's head.

"I did at first, but the ball just died and he was there," Martin said. "I thought I struck it better than that, but obviously I didn't."

Masterson got the first two outs in the seventh, but gave up consecutive singles to Jeter and Nick Swisher. Acta pulled Masterson, who got a loud ovation from the crowd of 34,374 - nearly half of them Yankees fans - as he left the field. Fortunately for the Indians, this time their bullpen didn't let them down.

In their previous 22 losses, the Indians had the lead at some point in nine of them but their relievers blew some games in the late innings.

NOTES: Jeter has a .366 career average at Progressive Field - his highest at any ballpark. He went 2 for 5 and leads the majors with 173 hits. ... Girardi expects LHP Andy Pettitte to appear in another major league game this season. Pettitte has been on the disabled list with a broken left ankle since June 28. He threw in the outfield before the game and is scheduled to visit Dr. Chris Ahmad on Monday in New York. ... The Indians are optimistic 3B Lonnie Chisenhall will return before the season ends. He broke his right arm when he was hit by a pitch June 29 and underwent surgery. Acta said Chisenhall will take on-field batting practice Monday.

Life Insurance Isn't Just for Dying! | Life And Leisure NJ

By Mark Charnet

Over the -past 30 years there have been many arguments about the types of life insurance policies available in the marketplace.? The media has compared Term vs. Whole Life vs. Variable Life vs. Universal Life and variations within each of these life insurance products. What has never been contested, debated or discussed, is the need for life insurance.? The need is universally accepted by everyone I have ever spoken to about the subject!? What?s interesting though is that most people would rather not discuss spending any money onlife insurance and that truly is disappointing, regrettable and may I also say flat-out wrong!

?

The #1 reason for the purchase of a policy, has traditionally been income replacement of the family breadwinner.? A close second has been to pay for a funeral and final expenses.? Other reasons include: debt coverage or a mortgage or a business partnership buy and sell arrangement to cover the expenses of college for the kids and to equalize inheritances.? Another fabulous reason to purchase a life policy is to settle the tax bill from the government, both state and federal, due to the onerous taxes imposed at death!? Some people purchased whole life policies to accumulate cash value for:emergencies, college savings, a first home purchase,a wedding or even to help with retirement income; and all of these were and are excellent reasons to have a life insurance policy.

?

Today, however, there are even more compelling reasons to take a look at how life insurance can work wonders for you!? The biggest one, in my opinion, is to create a non-qualified deferred compensation plan as a retirement plan supplement.? Yes, in addition to your IRA, 401k, savings and emergency funds a properly funded life insurance policy can work wonders for your future in a tax-free environment.? But wait, there?s still more!? Now, your life insurance policy can offer payments prior to death if you are unable to perform some of the activities of daily living like: bathing, moving from room to room, dressing or feeding yourself. If you have a cognitive impairment like senility, Alzheimer?s or dementia your life insurance policy can pay you a partial claim.?? A new life policy can pay a partial claim if you have a heart attack or a stroke or cancer and don?t die! Did you know that? ?If you are diagnosed with a terminal illness, this too will trigger a partial claim.? You know what?s also unique?? These benefits are also available on certain Term policies as well!? Imagine, for one premium you can get coverage for all of these contingencies at the same time from one policy and it will still pay a death benefit when you die!

?

Now it?s true that a traditional long-term care policy would offer substantially greater benefits than a life insurance policy with a long-term care rider, but, how many of my readers have either not considered, cancelled or have inadequate long-term care protection?? With the cost of a nursing home in our area exceeding $100,000+ annually and the average length of stay to be around three years, the latest statistics tell us that there is a 70% chance if you are over age 75, that you will enter a nursing home or the watered down definition, an assisted living facility, before you die! The risk to your portfolio and estate requires a second look at providing this much needed protection.? I teach in my workshops that a life insurance policy may be the best long-term care policy of all in that you might never have the nursing home experience, but, for sure you?re going to die!? If there was an intrusion into your net-worth to pay for long-term care, the life insurance policy would ultimately replace those funds tax-free.? If you and or your spouse never spent a dime on long-term care, the life insurance pay-off could be used for one of the reasons mentioned earlier.? Your kids can certainly use the infusion of capital for their retirement years or your grandchildren?s college expenses or to pay estate taxes at your death ?? whatever the reason, I can assure you it won?t go unused!

?

No, life insurance isn?t just for dying anymore!? It?s actually better if used for living!? With that thought in mind, may I suggest a policy review to determine if a new and improved model might be better suited to your individual needs in 2012 then when you originally made your purchase in the past.? Have no policy yet?? Regardless of your age or health, it behooves you to investigate your options. Call today for information.? As always there is no cost or fee to inquire, so come in and get the facts and more information. Both you and your family will benefit!

NASA jets, tickets taking off for shuttle flight

NASA is deploying a few high-flying paparazzi to Hollywood to scout out the best photo spots for next month's arrival of one of its biggest stars: space shuttle Endeavour.

Meanwhile on the East Coast, tickets have just gone on sale for the public to stake out their own photo ops to see Endeavour as it departs its Florida spaceport for the final time. Endeavour, which flew 25 times to space, is being ferried to Los Angeles for display at the California Science Center.

On Saturday, two NASA jets ? a T-38 astronaut trainer and an F-18 Hornet ? will circle the skies over Los Angeles at an altitude of approximately 1,500 feet. The jet flights, which are in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration, have been described by NASA as only "to capture photographic imagery."

But it's no secret that the aircraft are part of the advance entourage for Endeavour. The retired orbiter, flying atop the space agency's modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, is scheduled to land at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Sept. 20.

Before touching down, the jumbo jet carrying Endeavour is expected to make several scenic flyovers of the L.A. area, setting up the possibility for some iconic shots to be taken of the shuttle soaring past famous landmarks like the Hollywood sign. Saturday's jet flights will scope out the best flight paths to capture those photos. [ Photos: How Shuttle Endeavour Was Made ]

NASA photographers embarked on a similar set of flights before Endeavour's older sister, space shuttle Discovery, arrived in Washington, D.C. in April. Two T-38 training jets were dispatched to the nation's capital to plot the shuttle's path, which later led to photos of Discovery flying past the Capitol Building, Washington Monument, White House and other historic landmarks.

Fly-out photo ops
Details on when, where and how to see Endeavour arrive in Los Angeles have not yet been announced, nor have any of the potential flyover locations along the shuttle's trip from Florida to California. Tickets however, went on sale Friday to see Endeavour depart its launch and landing site for a final time.

NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will host four days of activities leading up to the scheduled takeoff of Endeavour atop the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft on Sept. 17 at approximately 7:30 a.m. EST (1200 GMT).

With general admission, the public can view the space shuttle ferry flight as it passes over the visitor complex. A limited number of $40 tickets (in addition to the general admission) will take guests out to NASA's Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF), for a runway-side seat to view Endeavour take off on its ferry flight to California.

The Visitor Complex is also offering a $20 tour (in addition to the general admission) on Sept. 14 and 15 that will offer guests a "windshield view" of Endeavour as it is mated to the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. The special tour will also drive by Endeavour's launch pads.

Other activities include a chance to see Endeavour's final astronauts, the crew of the 2011 STS-134 mission, during their visit to the visitor complex. ?

Final ferry flight
Endeavour is the last of NASA's retired shuttles to take to the air.

In April, the fleet leader Discovery and the prototype test orbiter Enterprise were ferried to Washington, D.C. and New York City, respectively. Atlantis, which is destined for the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, will be moved the short distance over land in November.

Endeavour will embark on a similar, if not longer road trip once in Los Angeles. For two days beginning on Oct. 12, the shuttle will be paraded atop a modified NASA wheeled transporter through the streets of Inglewood and L.A.

By dusk on Sept. 13, Endeavour is expected to be inside the California Science Center's newly-constructed Samuel Oschin Display Pavilion.

Endeavour's exhibit will open to the public on Oct. 30. The pavilion is a temporary display however, as the science center plans to ultimately house Endeavour in its planned Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, targeted to open in 2017.

For its permanent display, Endeavour will be mounted as it was on the launch pad with side-mounted rockets and a replica of its external tank. In preparation for that exhibit, a pair of the shuttle's solid rocket boosters were scheduled to arrive on Friday at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, where they will be held until the science center is ready.

The two 149-foot long boosters were previously on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, from where they were trucked to California.

For more information or to reserve viewing tickets, see the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex's website. See shuttles.collectspace.com for continuing coverage of the delivery and display of NASA's retired space shuttles.

What reason would a MAN have to pursue a romantic relationship ...

Question by Mike T: What reason would a MAN have to pursue a romantic relationship outside of SEX?
READ THE WHOLE QUESTION BEFORE YOU ANSWER PLEASE.

This is a SERIOUS question. I don?t want knee-jerk defensive answers. I want honestly and thought.

Sex is the only thing that differinciates a romantic relationship from a Friendship. Thus, a man NOT interested in sex would NOT be interested in dating a woman.

Therefore, how can women get offended that men are ?after sex??

Love = Friendship
Security = Self-esteem, good health and money
Companionship = Friendship, family, Pets
Entertainment = Frienship, TV, Internet, Travel, Leisure
Sex = Romantic relationships

See?
It what I say is FALSE. They why don?t people ever get into romantic relationships and NEVER have sex? Why have sex? hmmmmmmmm??
PEOPLE.. if you DON?T want sex.. then it becomes friendship!!!! Thats my whole point!! Its either friendship or sex. If there is sex.. its romantic. If there is no sex.. its FRIENDSHIP..
?Princess? I know.. thats my whole point. All romance either starts with sex or LEADS to sex. No way of getting around it.

Best answer:

Answer by Princess!!
Ah Mikey?if you actually do feel like that then you are a minority. Not many people are happy living one their own without a soulmate.

And don?t you wonder how you obtained that family? From relationships.

men aren?t only after sex, if you genuinely feel the way you do it?s nothing to do with gender.

People want relationships because they give you all those things. The average mind doesn?t think ?right, entertainment ? tv!?

You can have all those things from those sources, but most people enjoy being with someone they love and sharing a special intimacey with only that person and being best friends with them.

So see? Yes I see that you are happy being a loner, but the majorty of people aren?t.

EDIT: I don?t understand your added details. Having sex is part of a relationship, you love someone you want to be intmate so you have sex. There?s nothing wrong with that. It bears no relation to you stating that you only want sex from a relationship. sex doesn?t = a relationship. Many people enjoy casual sex, men and women but that?s just them. A relationship is different.

Also sex doesn?t equal romance. And people that are into casual sex have what they call ?friendships with benefits?.

What do you think? Answer below!

The Global Network

Line of Duty, a BBC Two British drama. Line of Duty, now on Hulu

BBC Drama Productions/IMDB.

Hulu was created by U.S. networks as a TV catch-up service, but lately its most striking feature is international content. While the site has long been home to subversive, quirky, and sweary foreign fare, this summer Hulu added more prestigious imports, including Rev., a deceptively gentle British comedy about an inner-city clergyman; The Yard, a Canadian mockumentary the Toronto Sun dubbed a ?kiddie Sopranos?; and Prisoners of War, the Israeli drama that inspired Showtime?s Homeland.

But the best new international addition to Hulu?s roster is Line of Duty, a tightly plotted BBC cop show that aired in Britain earlier this summer. Like many British series, Line of Duty is short and intense, running for just five one-hour episodes. (Hulu will be releasing a new episode every Tuesday through Sept. 18.) Line of Duty is particularly notable because it?s the kind of show that American networks generally don?t provide: a gripping, plot-driven series that may or may not last beyond its limited run. And so Hulu, which began as an effort to serve the interests of the big American channels in the age of online streaming, has become a place for viewers to find the kind of television they haven?t been getting. And these formats that are neglected in the United States have their own creative payoffs. Speaking by telephone from his home in England, the show?s creator Jed Mercurio told me that the short run helped him to focus: ?It?s like being in a plane trying to take off. You see that you?re running out of runway and know that you have to take off quickly.?

Line of Duty certainly manages that, starting with the screams, gunshots, and confusion of a botched anti-terrorism raid. A stupid mistake leaves the wrong man dead and a senior officer ordering the policemen involved to cover up their mistake. When Det. Sgt. Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) refuses to lie, he?s forced out of the tight-knit world of counterterrorism and ends up in the mopey copper?s last, lonely holdout: the anti-corruption squad. Arnott?s new boss, Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), directs him to investigate a confident, charismatic cop named Tony Gates?played with irresistible charm by Lennie James?whose team boasts the area?s best clearance record. Is the by-the-book Hastings simply jealous of Gates? success? Is Hastings?who thinks he suffered more discrimination than Afro-Caribbean Gates while growing up in sectarian Northern Ireland?just another racist cop? And are the accusations against Gates?adding extra charges to successful prosecutions and dumping hard-to-solve crimes on other teams?really all that serious?

That?s when Line of Duty becomes television?s most exciting exploration of the world?s dullest subject: bureaucracy?which, the show proves, can be fascinating. Mercurio created the series in part to challenge the notion, reinforced by traditional cop shows, that the police investigate all the serious crimes that come their way. In fact, as he wrote in the Guardian, police in Britain ?routinely drop one in three reported crimes because they are under pressure to concentrate on cases that can be solved within a workable timeframe by workable manpower.? Throughout the five episodes, smart police work is constrained by unreasonable rules and regulations.

Don?t worry, though: Line of Duty isn?t all data-mining and office politics. The detectives are dragged away from their computers to investigate a gang that?s dropping fingerless bodies around a grim housing estate full of feral kids. With their two-score of episodes to fill, American series rarely pull off consistently thrilling cliffhangers, but Line of Duty manages four genuine fingernail-chewers. And even after it?s clear that Gates is no saint, his motivations?especially his conflicting loyalties to friends, lovers, and family?are so convincingly expressed that he somehow manages to retain viewers? sympathy.

In fact, all the characters?from a stressed-out civilian support worker to the jealous police officers outside Gates? magic circle?make psychological sense. When I asked Mercurio why a young white lad who?s part of the criminal gang always calls Gates a ?bent bastard,? rather than referring to his race, he told me, ?A streetwise kid like that would recognize that someone like Gates had dealt with racism in the past and was probably pretty thick-skinned about it. He?d have the tools to cope with it, particularly from a kid, whereas the idea of being accused of being corrupt was new and particularly destabilizing.?

Watching Arnott put in mind-numbing hours paging through files and clicking through databases in London, it?s impossible not to think of The Wire?s Lester Freamon and Roland ?Prez? Pryzbylewski toiling over their wiretaps in Baltimore. It?s a reminder that television has become more global. Although U.S. networks have been importing and ?translating? British shows since the days of All in the Family and Sanford and Son, contemporary viewers have more access to both original inspirations and subsequent interpretations. Not long ago, a diehard Homeland fan might have learned it was based on an Israeli series, but would have had no way of seeing the original. Now she just has to call up Hulu.

Unfortunately, U.S. television is downright unfriendly to short series like Line of Duty, no matter how good they are. By the time they find an audience?if they find an audience?their twists and turns have already unspooled, and it?s time for a new show to take up residence. What?s more, the ?adult language? that often appears in British shows?sometimes with breath-taking frequency?can relegate them to graveyard time slots. It?s insane that scheduling snafus deprive U.S. viewers of high-quality television. But as more people acquire devices that allow them to watch on the big screen, Hulu, and other services like it, may help viewers reimagine what television can do.

The 2012 RSA President?s Lecture

We are living in a time of "Great Reset" - when economic crisis provides an opportunity to rethink virtually every aspect of our lives - from how and where we live, to how we work, to how we invest in individuals and infrastructure, to how we shape our cities and regions.

Taking a deeper look at the forces reshaping our economy, and giving us a provocative new way to think about why we live as we do - and where we might be headed, Richard Florida?shows how these forces, when combined, will spur a fresh era of growth and prosperity, define a new geography of progress, and create surprising opportunities for all of us.

Using lessons from the last ten years to show how Creative Class theory has grown from a prediction to a prescription for an economy in turmoil, Florida argues the need for a new social compact to put us back on the path to economic growth. Florida?s Creative Compact commits to developing the full human potential and creative capabilities of every person, and suggests a new set of institutional supports to ensure a more robust and sustainable social system around the new world of work.

Speaker: Dr Richard Florida, director, the Martin Prosperity Institute and Professor of Business and Creativity at the?University of Toronto and NYU; senior editor, The Atlantic and is the author of several influential global best sellers, including the award-winning 'The Rise of the Creative Class'.

Introduced by: HRH The Princess Royal, RSA President.

Northlake Christian 2012 prep football preview

, August 23, 2012 3 a.m.

Northlake Christain may be due for some good fortune in 2012. - (Ellis Lucia / The Times-Picayune)

After his team averaged giving up 31.1 points in its first nine games last season, including a horrendous 46.7 for the first three, Northlake Christian Coach Tony Agresta decided he had to fire his defensive coordinator ? himself.

?I?d been trying to run both sides of the ball,? said Agresta, who appointed assistant Mark Robert to succeed him. ?And it?s impossible to be making defensive adjustments during a game when you?re also calling plays.?

?I should have realized that earlier.?

Even that, Agresta acknowledges, may not have prevented a fall from winning the District 8-2A championship in 2010 to 4-6 and missing the playoffs in 2011.

Too much inexperience compounded by too many injuries probably couldn?t be overcome by any coaching adjustments.

But it?s obvious the Wolverines? top priority for 2012 is shoring up the defense, even more than replacing 2,000-yard All-State running back Mallery Mele, who also was the team?s kicker and return man, if last year is to wind up being only a temporary dip for what had been a program on the way up.

?First, Mark is an experienced coach and an excellent game-planner,? Agresta said. ?We?re not changing our basic things, but we?re going to tweak a few things.

?We?re a program that prided itself on defense and ball-control offense. You can come back from a bad half on offense, but when you?re defense is giving up points, it?s a lot harder.?

It wasn?t, Agresta stressed, a lack of effort on the players part. But injuries never let the team get anywhere near to full strength. One starter, linebacker Landry Lyon, still is trying to come back from a staph infection.

?Our defense is based on bringing up our linebackers to make tackles,? Agresta said. ?You can?t get any more essential than that.

?We have to have guys that can run to the ball.?

One player whose problem was what happened after he ran to the ball is senior linebacker Will Sigl.

Sigl, who also starts at tight end, played last season with a torn labrum which he says left him about 80 percent effectiveness.

?My shoulder would pop out two of three times a game,? Sigl said. ?So I couldn?t go at full speed.

?And I couldn?t wrap up, so I just tried to run through guys.?

Despite the pain, Sigl said, his situation was less frustrating than seeing his team struggle.

?We felt like the district championship had been a big breakthrough,? he said. ?And we knew we were capable of being so much better.

?At least we finished on a good note (a 37-0 victory against downtrodden St. Helena Central) to let our seniors go out the right way. But it wasn?t any fun not going to the playoffs.?

Along with Sigl, six other defensive starters from last year return, led by All-District junior tackle Riley Risher, senior free safety Dane Landry and sophomore linebacker Adam Riche, who was promoted to starter last year due to the injuries.

The offense won?t have a Mele-like player. Actually, Mele wasn?t supposed to be Mele last year, but he improved so rapidly as the season went along that handing him the ball in the Wolverines? two-tight end, single back offense became virtually the only option.

Junior Taylor Mussachia will take over the tailback spot and he will get plenty of carries, although probably not as many as Mele?s 28 per-game of last year.

That?s because the focus of the offense will be junior quarterback Josh O?Rear. Last season, O?Rear primarily handed the ball off to Mele with occasional passes thrown in.

This time, he may not be throwing much more, but he definitely will be keeping the ball more.

?I think I had to get used to the speed of the game last year,? O?Rear said. ?We?ve got a bunch of guys like that on offense, but we?re all a year older and hopefully better.?

The return of four of five starters on the line, led by Risher and senior guard Garrett Loupe, should help that happen.

But if the Wolverines are to challenge for the district title or at least return to the playoffs, it will depend on the recovery of the defense.

To Sigl, whose recovery from surgery is ahead of schedule, that?s a given.

?We?re going to be strong because people are going to have their heads in the game,? he said. ?The other teams aren?t going to know what hit ?em.?

3 Tips for Improving Your Health and Fitness | GULDSILVERLINK.SE

Posted by Marcellus Rine

It can be really depressing if you look at yourself in the mirror and don?t like what you see. But changing all that is something only you can do for yourself. If you?re not happy with your current level of health and fitness, take that leap to fix it. It?s very possible to look and feel much better. This isn?t a new idea, but it may feel a bit foreign to you. Below are three simple tips that can help to improve your health and fitness.

Incidental exercise done throughout the day is a great way to boost fitness easily, but planning a dedicated workout is better. So work on toning up muscles a bit and add some kind of aerobic activity into your day. Building muscle tone does not mean you?ll bulk up, as they?re completely different things. You should also find there are so many different ways to add more aerobic activity, so choose one that will be fun for you. There are also lots of simple things you can do to boost upper body strength. Try something that lets you use your own body weight for resistance, like calisthenics or Pilates. But those results won?t come if you?re not committed to what you?re doing. You can even alter your workouts to suit whatever fitness level you?re happy with instead of building up even further. A great health supplement to complement your exercise routines would be raspberry ketones.

Many of us simply don?t get the right nutrients we need to function optimally, but this can be amended by taking good quality vitamin supplements. But you should do a bit of research before choosing the right one for you. The companies making supplements aren?t always scrutinized closely, so quality levels may vary. But even if you already eat well, supplements can help ensure you?re getting the right balance. They help to ensure a better balance of the right vitamins and minerals. Always choose a supplement designed specifically for men or for women. Men need to avoid choosing supplements with high iron levels, as these may not be beneficial. However, women do require more iron to help counteract the reduction in iron levels each month.

Eat something simple during the mid-morning hours (9am to 10am). This is critical if you are accustomed to skipping breakfast. This is critical if you are accustomed to skipping breakfast. U.S. home sales rise, but recovery tenuous | Real ... - Financial Post

WASHINGTON ? U.S. home resales rose in July as low interest rates and a modest improvement in the labour market helped home buying conditions, the National Association of Realtors said on Wednesday.

The NAR said existing home sales rose 2.3% to an annual rate of 4.47 million units last month. That was just below analysts? expectations of a 4.52 million-unit rate.

Nationwide, the median price for a home resale was $187,300 in July, 9.4% higher than in the same month a year earlier.

?Mortgage interest rates have been at record lows this year,? said NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun, adding that the labor market was also showing signs of improvement. ?Combined, these factors are helping to unleash pent up demand.?

The U.S. housing market, which began falling into a deep rut six years ago, has been a relative bright spot in the economy this year. Home prices have shown signs of stabilizing and many economists think residential construction will give a slight boost to the economy this year.

But home building now plays a much smaller economic role than it did before the 2007-2009 recession, and a turn for the worse in the broader economy could easily undo housing?s incipient recovery.

Barring potential problems from abroad like a worsening in Europe?s debt crisis, most economists expect U.S. economic growth will pick up in the second half of the year but still be lacklustre.

A separate report showed applications for U.S. home mortgages tumbled last week, with demand for refinancing drying up as mortgage rates jumped to their highest level since late June.

The Mortgage Bankers Association said its seasonally adjusted index of mortgage application activity, which includes both refinancing and home purchase demand, fell 7.4% in the week ended Aug 17.

Fixed 30-year mortgage rates jumped 10 basis points to average 3.86%. Even with the increase, rates are still at relatively cheap levels after falling to record lows in recent months.

Reds prospect Hamilton steals record 146th base

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) ? Cincinnati Reds minor leaguer Billy Hamilton bolted to his record 146th stolen base of the season and kept running Tuesday night, swiping four in the first game of Double-A doubleheader.

Hamilton added his 147th steal in the final inning of Pensacola's 4-2 loss to Montgomery. Hamilton stole 104 in the first half of the season with Class A Bakersfield, then was promoted to the Southern League.

Hamilton broke the record for steals by minor league teams affiliated with big league organizations set by Vince Coleman in 1983 with 145 for Macon in the Class A South Atlantic League.

The modern major league record was set by Rickey Henderson with 130 in 1982.

Hamilton stole second base in the first inning, then swiped second and third in the third inning to eclipse Coleman's mark. Hamilton made a headfirst slide for the record-breaker and Pensacola manager Jim Riggleman, who was coaching third base, gave him a hearty handshake as the crowd rewarded the speedster with a standing ovation.

Hamilton's teammates came out of the dugout to applaud him. Ryan LaMarre, who was batting at the time for the Blue Wahoos, came down the third base line to congratulate him.

The 21-year-old Hamilton has been caught stealing 33 times this season. He has forced many errors and balks while on the bases.

Hamilton has played 120 games this year. Coleman played 113 games during his record-setting season and was caught stealing 31 times.

Discovery may hold key to restoring speech after paralysis

Diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease at 21, British physicist Stephen Hawking, now 70, relies on a computerized device to speak. Engineers are investigating the use of brainwaves to create a new form of communication for Hawking and other people suffering from paralysis. -Daily Mail

Scientists at UCLA and the Technion, Israel's Institute of Technology, have unraveled how our brain cells encode the pronunciation of individual vowels in speech. Published in the Aug. 21 edition of Nature Communications, the discovery could lead to new technology that verbalizes the unspoken words of people paralyzed by injury or disease.

"We know that brain cells fire in a predictable way before we move our bodies," explained Dr. Itzhak Fried, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "We hypothesized that neurons would also react differently when we pronounce specific sounds. If so, we may one day be able to decode these unique patterns of activity in the brain and translate them into speech."

Fried and Technion's Ariel Tankus, formerly a postdoctoral researcher in Fried's lab, followed 11 UCLA epilepsy patients who had electrodes implanted in their brains to pinpoint the origin of their seizures. The researchers recorded neuron activity as the patients uttered one of five vowels or syllables containing the vowels.

With Technion's Shy Shoham, the team studied how the neurons encoded vowel articulation at both the single-cell and collective level. The scientists found two areasthe superior temporal gyrus and a region in the medial frontal lobethat housed neurons related to speech and attuned to vowels. The encoding in these sites, however, unfolded very differently.

Neurons in the superior temporal gyrus responded to all vowels, although at different rates of firing. In contrast, neurons that fired exclusively for only one or two vowels were located in the medial frontal region.

"Single neuron activity in the medial frontal lobe corresponded to the encoding of specific vowels," said Fried. "The neuron would fire only when a particular vowel was spoken, but not other vowels."

At the collective level, neurons' encoding of vowels in the superior temporal gyrus reflected the anatomy that made speech possiblespecifically, the tongue's position inside the mouth.

"Once we understand the neuronal code underlying speech, we can work backwards from brain-cell activity to decipher speech," said Fried. "This suggests an exciting possibility for people who are physically unable to speak. In the future, we may be able to construct neuro-prosthetic devices or brain-machine interfaces that decode a person's neuronal firing patterns and enable the person to communicate."
