From fall's TV crop, 10 newcomers worth sampling (AP)

NEW YORK ? The fall TV season isn't what it once was. Series are rolled out by the networks year-round, as fall premieres blend into midseason arrivals and beyond.

But between Sept. 13 and Nov. 23 (when the Fox straggler "I Hate My Teenage Daughter" premieres), the five major broadcast networks will unveil a couple of dozen new shows.

Two tips about that: Forget you ever heard about "I Hate My Teenage Daughter."

And make a special point to sample these recommended newcomers:

? "Ringer" (CW; premieres Sept. 13). Eight years after "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," Sarah Michelle Gellar is back in a new series, and it's a ring-a-ding-dinger. In one of her multiple roles, she plays Bridget, a stripper and drug addict in Wyoming who has struck a deal to testify against a fearsome villain whose latest heinous act she witnessed. But, fearing for her safety, Bridget flees instead. She reconnects in Manhattan with her rich, long-estranged identical twin, Siobhan. But only after she appropriates her sister's identity does she realize that Sis' secret life makes her own seem idyllic by comparison. The first episode of "Ringer" is full of wicked twists that promise lots of juicy complications to come. And for Gellar fans in particular, this show is a must-see: You get not just one, but two of her.

? "Free Agents" (NBC; premieres Sept. 14). Alex is newly divorced and missing his kids. Helen is battling her loneliness with booze months after her fiance's untimely death. As co-workers in a high-profile public relations agency, they share one ill-advised night of passion, then, post-tryst, must face each other in the office. What to do now? "Free Agents" has sassy, rapid-fire dialogue and, in a welcome change for a TV sitcom, grown-up comic plights. Hank Azaria ("The Simpsons," "Huff") plays Alex, about whom Helen aptly says, "I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but you're an absolute mess." To that, Alex counters that Helen (played by Kathryn Hahn, "Hung") is just fine ? at least, "apart from some problem drinking, occasionally mixed in with some impulsive sexual acting out," whereupon he adds, "I just happen to be free right now, if you'd care to have several drinks and just kind of see what happens." What happens, long-term, is likely to be a humorously awkward romance.

? "2 Broke Girls" (CBS; premieres Sept. 19). Thank Bernie Madoff for this delightful comedy. Formerly wealthy Manhattan socialite Caroline is broke and disgraced after her Madoff-like dad is busted for his Wall Street piracy. Caroline seeks refuge in a downtrodden Brooklyn diner where, stylishly clad in her last Chanel suit, she lands a job alongside streetwise, likewise money-strapped Max, for whom waitressing is only one of two daily jobs. Despite their differences, they strike up a tentative friendship ? and a business plan: Max bakes great cupcakes and Caroline turns out to have surprising business smarts. Is a sweet culinary empire in their future? Maybe, but not before they earn enough tips to get themselves out of hock. In the meantime, "2 Broke Girls" is blessed by sharp writing and a pair of young actresses who radiate instant comic chemistry.

? "The Playboy Club" (NBC; premieres Sept. 19). This sexy melodrama is set in 1961 at the just-opened Chicago nightspot meant to build on Playboy magazine's seductive appeal, and it boasts romance, crime, period music and the aura of a glamorous, long-gone era. A half-century later, the power of the Playboy brand is such that merely attaching it to a glitzy prime-time soap is enough to scandalize modern-day cultural puritans. But people who actually watch the show will find "The Playboy Club" to be a plush escape, behind the scenes of a legendary watering hole. And note that the Playboy bunnies, lovely as they are, are costumed more demurely than contestants on "Dancing With the Stars." Starring as the bunnies are Amber Heard, Jenna Dewan Tatum, Naturi Naughton, Leah Renee and, as the Bunny Mother, Laura Benanti. Eddie Cibrian plays a mysterious lawyer, power broker (and, of course, playboy) who's a regular at the club. And David Krumholtz plays the general manager, who makes sure the club's pleasure principles are rigorously followed.

? "New Girl" (Fox; premieres Sept. 20). As a wounded survivor of the relationship wars, Jess Day is something of a younger variation on Liz Lemon, the character that Tina Fey plays masterfully on "30 Rock." Jess is goofy, good-natured and unguarded in her dealings with the world ? and especially tone-deaf with men. When she catches her boyfriend with another woman in their apartment, she bolts for new living quarters, and ends up sharing a spacious loft with three guys. As played by the adorable Zooey Deschanel ("(500) Days of Summer"), Jess is not without her charms. But the likelihood of hanky-panky with any of her roomies seems slight. Instead, she seems to have drafted them as surrogate big brothers, with her domestic proximity forcing them to learn more about the female psyche than they ever dreamed. Played by Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield and Lamorne Morris, these chaps have plenty of male hang-ups, which Jess' female presence may help remedy. Rounding out this little family is Jess' childhood best friend, Cece (Hannah Simone), who's a gorgeous model and knows the score about womanhood and men. It's an amusing support system for all concerned ? including viewers.

? "Revenge" (ABC; premieres Sept. 21). Emily Thorne is a wholesome, polished and friendly newcomer to the getaway known as the Hamptons in New York's Long Island. But Emily is an impostor. With her false name and identity, she's going undercover into Hamptons high society to wreak havoc on those who, years before, wronged her and her father terribly. She has a hit list, and "Revenge" seems poised to deliciously track her payback mission. Prime-time soaps set among the privileged class are nothing new, of course ? decades ago, "Dallas" and "Dynasty" gloried in that world, pitting rich good guys against rich villains. But "Revenge" seems more of a show for today, where everyone who's rich is suspect. Played by Emily Van Camp ("Brothers & Sisters," "Everwood"), its heroine aims to take the rich folks down, one by one. It should be a blast watching her do it ? and measuring the cost it exacts on her in the process.

? "Person of Interest" (CBS; premieres Sept. 22). An obscure software genius and an ex-CIA agent believed to be dead: This is the duo who dedicate themselves to preventing bad things from happening ? even without knowing what the bad thing will be. This is an edgy thriller that links the video surveillance that blankets modern life with a computer program that identifies each "person of interest" ? someone who, whether as a victim or a perpetrator, is about to be involved in a violent crime. Michael Emerson ("Lost") is the obscure man with the software, and he recruits Jim Caviezel, playing an off-the-grid ex-spy, to do his legwork. The premiere episode is brooding and action-packed, and plants a nice creepy feeling in the viewer. Out in the real world, you'll never look at all those video cameras on buildings or lampposts the same way again.

? "A Gifted Man" (CBS; premieres Sept. 23). Dr. Michael Holt is a brilliant Manhattan-based surgeon-to-the-stars, but often his manner would make Dr. House seem warm and cuddly. Holt has charm he can switch on and off with the precision of his scalpel in the operating room. He is an overachiever in every sense, except as a man, and at odd moments he acknowledges it. "I know that being the best isn't PART of your life," he tells one patient, a 19-year-old tennis star with whom he identifies ? "it's INSTEAD of it." But then his ex-wife, a fellow doctor and maybe the one woman he ever loved, re-enters his life. The twist is, she's dead. A radiant redhead with a tender, loving manner, she appears lifelike to him but is seen by no one else. She wants him to help finish her work at the medical clinic she ran for the poor. He wants her help in reclaiming his humanity. But as a man of science, can he handle this irrational arrangement? "Why," she asks him, "can't I be the one thing in life you don't understand?" Patrick Wilson ("Little Children") and Jennifer Ehle ("The King's Speech") co-star in a drama that's more than a romance; it's a bracing exploration into how science co-exists with faith.

? "Pan Am" (ABC; premieres Sept. 25). The viewer's first reaction to watching this show might be to burst into tears. Revisiting the glorious dawn of the jet age in 1963, as compared with air travel today, is like comparing the Orient Express with Amtrak. Today's flat-screen TVs on airline seatbacks don't compensate for everything the passenger has lost since those grand days of Pan Am, and this first-class new drama is an eyepopping reminder. It stars Christina Ricci, Kelli Garner, Margot Robbie and Karine Vanasse as the beautiful stewardesses (one of whom, adding to her awesomeness, is recruited as a government spy). "They don't know that they're a new breed of woman," says one of the dashing pilots (played by Mike Vogel and Michael Mosley) to the other. "They just had the impulse to take flight." On "Pan Am," there's romance, glamour and excitement for a new, ascendant age. And no one has to take off their shoes, until they're back at their hotel, hopping into bed.

? "Once Upon a Time" (ABC; premieres Oct. 23). The whimsical abandon of this comedy-drama recalls "Pushing Daisies" and "Ugly Betty," and comes from co-creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, whose credits include "Lost" and "Tron: Legacy." It begins with an enchanted forest and the Seven Dwarfs as Prince Charming's kiss brings the deceased Snow White back to life. But before this loving couple has a chance to live happily ever after, the Evil Queen delivers a curse that traps them in the modern world. More specifically, they ? and the rest of the universe of fairy tale characters ? are rendered mortal, ordinary and frozen in time in Storybrooke, Maine. They don't remember that they used to be storybook characters. They're denied the happy endings all good storybook characters are guaranteed. Their only hope: intervention by Emma Swain, a 28-year-old Bostonian who just may be the long-missing daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. It is she who must do battle with the Evil Queen, who, now known as Regina, is the mayor of Storybrooke. Ginnifer Goodwin ("Big Love"), Jennifer Morrison ("House"), Josh Dallas and Lana Parrilla star in a series that's dazzling to watch, kooky in concept, and leaves you after its first hour asking, "What just happened?" But you want to see more.

Irene cuts power to 3.3 million (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Hurricane Irene knocked out power to 3.3 million homes and businesses along the East Coast, forced two nuclear plants to shut and idled oil ports and refining as it approached New York City early on Sunday.

The category 1 storm made landfall in New Jersey before dawn with 75 mile-per-hour/120 kph winds, dumping heavy rain and provoking storm surges. The hurricane was 40 miles southwest of New York City at 8:00 a.m. EDT, the National Hurricane Center said.

Mid-Atlantic coast states reported more power losses even as blackouts in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut jumped. In New York City and nearby Westchester County, some 80,000 customers lost electricity.

Consolidated Edison, which powers nearly 3 million homes and businesses -- or more than 8 million residents -- in the city warned that flooding could prompt much wider power cuts in downtown Manhattan.

Two East Coast nuclear power plants shut to ensure safety. Aluminum siding flew off a building in Maryland and slammed into a transformer at CENG's Calvert Cliff reactor early Sunday, forcing it to shut and declare an "unusual event," the lowest level of nuclear emergency. CENG said the reactor was safe and secure.

As a precaution against winds, Exelon Corp took its Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in New Jersey offline on Saturday. The plant normally supplies electricity to as many as 600,000 homes.

Several East Coast oil refineries throttled back operations and ConocoPhillips shut its Bayway plant in New Jersey.

With gale-force winds and rough seas threatening shipping, the oil hubs of New York Harbor and the Port of Philadelphia declared alert level "Zulu," an emergency designation that severely restricts vessel traffic, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

IRENE NEARS NEW YORK CITY

The path of Irene was shifting westward, raising the prospect of 10-foot/(3 meter) storm surges, forecasters said. That could raise the odds of blackouts in New York City.

Con-Ed said it was evaluating whether to turn off power later on Sunday in low-lying areas of Manhattan including the Financial District. Hundreds of thousands of residents in the area have already evacuated to higher ground.

"We're now at a critical moment of the storm with debris starting to fly due to the high winds," said Con-Ed spokeswoman Joy Faber. "Our crews in the field are reporting more hazardous conditions."

Shutting off power in downtown Manhattan before flooding from a storm surge could lessen the time required to restart services.

Irene earlier cut power to large swaths of Virginia and North Carolina as it came ashore, prompting Brunswick nuclear power plant in Southport, North Carolina to reduce power generation.

Spotify, SoundHound combine forces in apps ? but only in Europe (Appolicious)

A couple of big-name mobile apps are joining forces to make finding and listening to music a lot easier ? at least in Europe.

SoundHound, which provides mobile apps that use a device?s microphone to ?listen? to songs playing nearby, then uses an Internet connection to identify them, has teamed up with Spotify to provide new services through both companies. Spotify is the European on-demand music streaming service that recently crossed the ocean to the U.S. after much waiting. It allows users to find and play pretty much any song they want to ? it has a catalogue of more than 15 million tracks ? in either an ad-supported version or for a monthly fee.

Both services provide some pretty useful mobile apps, and both appear on both Google?s Android operating system and on Apple?s iOS platform. The combination of the two opens up the ability for mobile users to use SoundHound to discover information about songs, then immediately launch Spotify to play them. It adds even more cool features to SoundHound, which recently added lyric tracking to its bag of app tricks.

That?s not a bad deal, considering that SoundHound could formerly bring users to the tracks they either searched for using the service (you can type in searches by band, song and album) or identified by sound, but only made them available for purchase. The partnership with Spotify, instead, makes it possible to listen to the song immediately, with no purchase required.

According to SoundHound?s press release, Spotify integration will be available to both free and paid SoundHound users, although you will need to be a Spotify Premium user, which runs about $7.99 a month. That removes the ads from Spotify and gives you unlimited access to the service, which can also play the music you have on your computer as part of your playlists designed in Spotify.

The only trouble with the whole partnership as it stands is that it?s exclusive to Europe. You?ll need to be a premium subscriber to Spotify in Europe to take full advantage of the link-ups with SoundHound, and the press release doesn?t say anything about the features possibly bridging the Atlantic.

It seems kind of doubtful that the SoundHound/Spotify partnership won?t reach to the U.S., though. It?s possible the two companies will use Europe as a testing ground, where Spotify is incredibly popular, to see if users start to gravitate toward the new features before spreading them to new markets. But it does seem that SoundHound will gain a lot more usefulness with Spotify?s help, and Spotify will become even cooler with the addition of SoundHound song-searching.

Grandparents play a bigger role in child-rearing (AP)

WASHINGTON ? America is swiftly becoming a granny state. Less frail and more involved, today's grandparents are shunning retirement homes and stepping in more than ever to raise grandchildren while young adults struggle in the poor economy.

The newer grandparents are mainly baby boomers who are still working, with greater disposable income. Now making up 1 in 4 adults, grandparents are growing at twice the rate of the overall population and sticking close to family ? if their grandkids aren't already living with them.

Grandparents in recent decades have often filled in for absent parents who were ill or battled addiction, or were sent to prison. The latest trend of grandparent involvement, reflected in census figures released Thursday, is now being driven also by the economy and the graying U.S. population, including the 78 million boomers born between 1946 and 1964 who began turning 65 this year.

"We help out in terms of running errands, babysitting, taking the grandkids to doctors' appointments, and for back-to-school shopping," said Doug Flockhart of Exeter, N.H., listing some of the activities that he and his wife, Eileen, do for their five kids and seven grandchildren. But that's just the start.

They also pitch in with health care payments for family members due to insurance gaps, and their pace of activity has picked up substantially since their daughter, who lives three blocks away, gave birth to her first child this month. Flockhart, a retired architect, likes the family time even if he and his wife worry about their grandkids' futures. Their oldest grandchild is 16.

"It's not so much the day in and day out, it's the big picture as to how these young kids will grow up and pay for a college education and buy a house," he said. "The middle class is so much less well-off than it used to be. We've put aside some savings for them, but with seven grandchildren it can only go so far."

Flockhart's situation is increasingly common, demographers say.

"Grandparents have become the family safety net, and I don't see that changing any time soon," said Amy Goyer, a family expert at AARP. "While they will continue to enjoy their traditional roles, including spending on gifts for grandchildren, I see them increasingly paying for the extras that parents are struggling to keep up with ? sports, camps, tutoring or other educational needs, such as music lessons."

The latest numbers are based partly on separate analyses by Goyer and Peter Francese, founder of American Demographics magazine who is now a population analyst for the MetLife Mature Market Institute. Their data were supplemented with the latest 2010 census figures as well as interviews with Census Bureau and other experts.

Currently about 5.8 million children, or nearly 8 percent of all children, are living with grandparents identified as the head of household, according to 50-state census data released Thursday. That's up from 4.5 million, or 6.3 percent, who lived in such households in 2000.

Much of the increase in grandparent caregivers occurred later in the decade after the recession eliminated jobs for many younger people, surveys indicate. The 8 percent share of children now living with grandparents is the largest in at least 40 years ? and it is believed to be the largest share ever, the population experts say.

In all, there are 62.8 million grandparents in the U.S., the most ever. They are projected to make up roughly 1 in 3 adults by 2020.

Nearly half the states had increases of 40 percent or more over the last decade in the number of grandchildren living with grandparents. They were led by states such as Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona and Kentucky, which had influxes of young families or suffered higher rates of poverty.

On the other end of the scale, New Jersey, New York, Michigan and Louisiana saw the smallest increases, less than 10 percent. Each of those states saw slower population growth overall since 2000, particularly among young people.

The District of Columbia posted a decline of more than 20 percent in grandchildren living with grandparents, a sign of growing gentrification in the nation's capital in which smaller-sized white families are replacing black families with grandparent caregivers, who are moving to suburban areas.

Francese says the stereotype of grandparents who are frail, receding and dependent is changing. He noted that unemployment among workers ages 25 to 34 last year was double that of Americans aged 55 to 64. U.S. households headed by baby boomers also commanded almost half of the nation's total household income, and are more likely to be college graduates than grandparents in previous generations.

These grandparents reject living in senior communities in favor of "aging in place" in their own homes, near family. In 2009, households ages 55 or older spent billions of dollars on infant food, clothes, toys, games, tuition and supplies for grandchildren, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"Grandparents are supposed to be old, gray-haired people tottering around, but the vast majority are actually in the work force," said Francese, who released a paper on the topic last month. "There is not much doubt that the recent recession has brought grandparents and grandchildren together."

The government figures come as a congressional supercommittee considers possible reductions to Medicare and Social Security to achieve $1.5 trillion in federal spending cuts under the terms of the debt ceiling agreement. Up until now, lawmakers' proposals to cut the entitlement programs have met resistance from older Americans, including those 45 and older, who now make up a majority of the voting-age population.

The committee must issue its recommendations by late November, with action by Congress before year's end, or various parts of government will face automatic spending cuts.

Estella Hyde, 65, who lives near Erie, Pa., said additional government aid ? not spending cuts ? would go a long way for grandparents. She and her husband have raised their granddaughter, now 18, off and on since she was a year old, when Hyde's daughter-in-law at the time said she didn't want the burden.

Eventually the Hydes were able to adopt their granddaughter legally, which allowed her to have coverage under their health plan, but only after the couple fought through red tape and paid $10,000 in adoption fees. After a difficult childhood, her granddaughter will attend college this fall.

"It never happens in a happy situation where a son or daughter comes and says, `I need you to raise a child for me,'" said Hyde, a nursing professor who is now retired. "We were very lucky, we were able to financially take care of her and support her. But many grandparent caregivers need other sources of assistance."

In all, the states with the highest shares of children living in households headed by grandparents are in the South and West. They include Hawaii, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, South Carolina and Texas, each with at least 1 in 10 children living in grandparent households.

Among the states with high concentrations of grandparents overall ? regardless of their living arrangement ? are Maine, West Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, Iowa and New Hampshire, according to some estimates.

Expired Listing Letter and Real Estate Marketing Tips | Daily ...

Expired Listing Letter and Real Estate Marketing Tips

The expired listing letter is a valuable asset for real estate marketing plans. Expired realty listings refer to contracts that have expired between homeowners and their agent. Realtor contracts generally last between six and twelve months. If the listed property is not sold during the contract period, sellers can enter into a new listing agreement with their current realtor, hire a new agent, list the property as for sale by owner, or take the home off the market.

Investors use the expired listing letter to solicit business from the seller by offering to buy their home or help them sell it. in order to find expired property listings, investors must subscribe to the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) database; a service that provides lists of nationwide properties for sale to realtors.

Investors who have never used expired listing letters can easily locate sample templates online. Investors will need to adapt marketing letters to suit sellers? circumstances. A good place to learn and share expired listing marketing ideas is by participating in real estate forums or networking groups.

In addition to using expired listing letters, investors will need to develop a marketing plan and follow-up strategies. Most investors incorporate multiple marketing tools such as postcard marketing, direct mail, referral marketing, realtor flyers or brochures, and cold calling.

The expired listing letter is generally used to solicit sellers, but some investors use these letters to solicit realtors. Working directly with real estate agents can be a profitable niche for investors willing to develop close working relationships. Realtors do the majority of legwork while investors earn profit by closing the deal.

Investors who are unfamiliar with marketing strategies should consider hiring a marketing specialist and copywriter to create expired listing letters and brochures. Real estate investors often use a variety of prospecting tools.

They might start with an introduction letter, followed by a postcard and a phone call. Or they might start with a phone call and send a folder filled with a marketing letter, client testimonials, and a list of successful real estate closings. regardless of the marketing strategy, the primary goal is to locate motivated sellers, purchase properties below market value, and earn profit on each expired listing transaction.

In today?s competitive market investors must stay on top of changing trends and create marketing campaigns that make them stand out from the crowd. Sellers often receive dozens of expired listing letters once their real estate contract expires. this is where creating unique marketing strategies can really pay off.

Private investors who dedicate their time to locating expired real estate listings often work with sellers that are frustrated their home did not sell during the listing period. The last thing these people want to hear is empty promises. They want to sell their property. Investors who focus on solving this problem can earn the seller?s business by focusing on their needs and explaining how they can help sellers accomplish their goals.

Real estate investing is a competitive industry. in order to become successful in this arena, investors must be committed to finding solutions for sellers. this can be accomplished by building a strong network of realty experts, developing a strong marketing plan, and utilizing strategies that will attract motivated buyers and quickly close real estate deals.

Umbrella liability insurance - Canadian Money Forum

Quote:

...
Most renters don't have it - and if I was a renter, I would take my chances and not purchase it.

More than likely nothing will happen to the house. If it does, it will most likely not be your fault. And if it is, what are the chances of them proving it was your fault?

I wouldn't do it. But it would be the safer route.

A nice cavalier attitude.

1. Tenant's liabiity insurance is usually packaged with a renter's property insurance - they rarely are separate. We regularly read reports of fires where tenants lost everything and were uninsured.

2. The landlord and/or his inurance company aren't the only ones who can sue a tenant. Liability covers you against any 3rd party. If your overflowing bathtub damages another apartment, the tenant of that apartment can also sue you. And probabaly will, because, like you, he was too cheap to insure his own contents too. If you have visitors who get bitten by your vicious dog, they can sue you. If you have a party and everyone gets food poisoning from your home-made hors d'oeuvres. they can all sue you. If you let your guests drive home stone drunk, and they kill some innocent bystanders, you can bet the victims' families will be looking for someone to sue.

Home Improvement Advice: Home Equity Credit Lines Versus Fixed Fee ...

Sign up for PayPal and start accepting credit card payments instantly.

Are you enthusiastic about mining the fairness for a house enchancment mortgage, however are questioning if in case you have missed the boat not doing a refinance and cashing out? There are nonetheless many home fairness loans obtainable that may fit your wants with out breaking the bank with payments. ?Dwelling-equity loans have been growing at a big clip for years,? notes Wells Fargo spokeswoman Mary Berg. ?It is definitely slowed, however persons are still borrowing. They?re finding different merchandise which might be extra flexible in this fee environment.? It?s true that there are numerous options for shoppers as of late and home fairness loans can be found as a credit score line with variable interest, as a fixed fee mortgage, and you can even find a second mortgage with curiosity only funds for a set period.

A home equity line of credit usually has a variable rate of interest tied to the prime index, which is published day by day in the Wall Road Journal. The rate is dictated by the Federal Reserve. This loan works in another way from a typical second mortgage. The HELOC is a revolving line of credit score that works like a credit card, but is secured by your home. You are able use the line for as long as the draw interval lasts. Though the charges are higher than credit cards, there may be still a variable interest rate and variable payments. This can be a good loan for residence improvements in case you plan on paying it off in a short period of time. Some HELOCs have interest-only payments for the first few years as incentive to utilize the product.

In case you would quite have a fixed fee to hedge in opposition to inflation and the fact that all of your payments will continue to extend, a standard second mortgage with a set rate of interest may go best for you. The payments may be greater than a loan with an curiosity only fee interval, however you will be certain of how much you might be paying month-to-month down the highway as well. An adjustable rate mortgage in a market with rising interest rates may be daunting.

Take into accout with all second mortgages you are borrowing towards your house, which implies if the funds turn out to be too much for you to handle, you?ll lose your home. If you are smart about utilizing your fairness, however, it can be used to your advantage.

As and internet grew in size and popularity, the amount of money spent on online advertising increased, as did the desire to develop a variety of cost effective advertising methods which promised a high return for low investment. This is where email marketing fits into the overall picture. It is high volume, high potential for return at a very low cost, there are some risk factors with it such as spam and blacklists.

There are four major areas which continue to own the majority of the online marketing shares are:

  • Paid search advertisement.

Banner advertising is simply a form of online advertising where web developers embed an advertisement into a web page. The idea is that the banner advertisement will catch the attention of website visitors and they will click on the ad to get more information about the products or services advertised. The addition of flashy advertising to interactivity has completed the online experiences where advertisers receive interactive and often entertaining advertisements disguised as music videos, games, and other interactive content, all with the ultimate goal of producing increased website traffic and internet sales. Although rich media may be the banner ad of the future, it still has a long way to go to replace traditional banner advertising.

TRIPOLI -- As rebel forces consolidated their control over Tripoli amid signs of disorganization within the ranks, the manhunt continued Monday for Col. Moammar Gadhafi, who was said by his son to be alive and well.

Three of Gadhafi's sons ? Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, Mohammed Gadhafi and Saadi Gadhafi ? were reported to have been captured by the rebels, but Seif later appeared before reporters at a Tripoli hotel, and rebels said Mohammed managed to escape.

Seif Gadhafi stunned onlookers when he showed up at the Rixos Hotel late Monday night and spoke to foreign journalists staying there.

Asked whether his father was safe, Seif Gadhafi said, "Of course." In an exchange captured on television, he said the rebels had fallen into a "trap" in Tripoli and that loyalist forces had "broken the spine of rebels."

Seif also said that Tripoli was under government control and that he did not care about an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in The Hague seeking him and his father for crimes against humanity.

Seif's public appearance contradicted the rebels' claims a day earlier that they had captured him and raised questions about the veracity of their assertions that up to 80 percent of the capital was under their control.

The rebel leadership seemed stunned that Seif was free. The leadership's spokesman, Sadeq al-Kabir, had no explanation and could only say, "This could be all lies."

He could not confirm whether Seif escaped rebel custody, but he did say that another captured Gadhafi son, Mohammed, had escaped the home arrest that rebels had placed him in a day earlier. On Monday, the rebels had said Seif was captured, but did not give details on where he was held.

Riding in a white limousine amid a convoy of armored SUVs, Seif took reporters on a drive through parts of the city still under the regime's control, saying, "We are going to hit the hottest spots in Tripoli."

The tour covered mainly the area that was known to still be under the regime's control ? the district around the Rixos hotel and nearby Bab al-Aziziya, Gadhafi's residential compound and military barracks. The tour went through streets full of armed Gadhafi backers, controlled by roadblocks, and into the Gadhafi stronghold neighborhood Bu Slim.

At Bab al-Aziziya, at least a hundred men were waiting in lines for guns being distributed to volunteers to defend the regime. Seif al-Islam shook hands with supporters, beaming and flashing the "V for victory" sign.

Story: After uprising, rebels face struggle for unity

"We are here. This is our country. This is our people, and we live here, and we die here," he told AP Television News. "And we are going to win, because the people are with us. That's why were are going to win. Look at them ? look at them, in the streets, everywhere!"

In Benghazi, the de facto rebel capital hundreds of miles east of Tripoli, the head of the rebel National Transitional Council said the rebels have no idea where Gadhafi is or whether he is even in Tripoli.

"The real moment of victory is when Gadhafi is captured," Mustafa Abdel-Jalil said. An Obama administration official said the U.S. had no indication that Gadhafi had left Libya.

NBC News' Richard Engel reported from Tripoli that opposition fighters had taken control of a majority of the capital ? but not, crucially, of Gadhafi's main Bab al-Aziziya compound.

U.S. President Barack Obama said it was clear that "the Gadhafi regime is coming to an end," but the White House was reported to be deeply concerned about the prospect that powerful Libyan missiles capable of shooting down commercial airliners had been smuggled out of the country.

And a crucial question remained unanswered: Where is Gadhafi, who hasn't been seen in public for weeks, limiting his communications to audio messages. The last of those was Sunday, when Gadhafi, 69, urged Libyans to take up arms against the rebel "rats."

U.S. officials told NBC News that the U.S. believed Gadhafi hadn't fled the country, unlike other senior figures. U.S. intelligence agencies believe he was most likely hiding somewhere in the Tripoli area, a senior official at the Defense Department said Monday.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., chairman of the Intelligence Committee, agreed, saying in an interview with MSNBC TV, "I believe he is in a bunker or a secure situation in Tripoli."

NATO, meanwhile, promised to maintain its air campaign until all pro-Gadhafi forces surrendered or returned to their barracks. Al Arabiya, citing rebel sources, reported late Monday that NATO was bombing the Bab al-Aziziya compound.

Video: NATO, US airstrikes will continue in Libya (on this page)

U.S. officials told NBC News on Monday that the U.S. and NATO strikes would continue as long as Gadhafi and parts of his military remained unaccounted for. The officials said Gadhafi himself would be a target.

A key worry for the U.S. is Gadhafi's stockpile of 20,000 shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles. That stockpile has been looted, and the U.S. officials said they feared some of the missiles had been smuggled out of the country, possibly into the hands of terrorists.

NATO warplanes have hit at least 40 targets in and around Tripoli in the last two days ? the highest number on a single geographic location since the bombing started more than five months ago, the alliance said.

NATO said loyalist forces responded Monday by firing three Scud-type missiles from Gadhafi's home city, Sirte, toward Misrata. Initial reports showed that the rockets landed most likely at sea or on the shore, NATO told Reuters, saying it wasn't aware of any casualties or damage.

The U.S., which is part of the NATO campaign, will continue flying Predator drone missions ? some of them armed ? over Libya, the Defense Department official told NBC News. But for now, the Obama administration's policy that there would be no "U.S. boots on the ground" remains in effect, the official said.

Where could he go?
A variety of sources reported that Gadhafi was headed to any of several countries ? among them Venezuela, Russia, Cuba, Angola, Zimbabwe, Algeria, South Africa and Tunisia ? but U.S. officials said they had no confirmation that he had even been extended an invitation by any country.

South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said Monday that his country wasn't helping Gadhafi leave and that it wouldn't offer him asylum. Algeria's foreign minister denied that Gadhafi was in his country. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a strong supporter, is reported to be seriously ill and unlikely to be able to guarantee protection.

Video: Gadhafi rule crumbles as rebels surge

Mahmud Nacua, a diplomatic representative for the rebels, said opposition fighters would "turn over every stone to find him, to arrest him and to put him in the court."

Obama urges peaceful transition
Speaking on tape from Martha's Vineyard, Mass., where he has been monitoring developments while on vacation, Obama noted that Gadhafi was still at large and that fighting was continuing amid a "fluid and uncertain" atmosphere in Tripoli and other major parts of Libya. But "the situation in Libya has reached a tipping point," he said, and the U.S. stands ready to help opposition leaders rebuild the country.

"This much is clear: The Gadhafi regime is coming to an end," Obama said, "The future of Libya is in the hands of its people."

Story: Covert teams from US, NATO boost rebel forces

Repeating comments he made in a written statement Sunday night, Obama said the U.S. recognized the National Transitional Council as the government of Libya and would be its "friend and partner."

Obama made a point of calling on the opposition "to take steps to ensure a peaceful transition" and said "the rights of all Libyans must be respected." The comments came as Abdel-Jalil, the rebels' leader, warned that some opposition forces were breaking off on their own and ignoring the chain of command.

Abdel-Jalil expressed deep frustration with indiscipline within the rebel movement, warning that some fighters' refusal to observe the chain of command "might be the reason or the cause of my resignation."

Interactive: Libyan uprising (on this page)

For months, the rebels ? most of them civilian volunteers who took up arms and had little military training ? were judged to be big on zeal but short on organization and discipline, but their stunning success in Tripoli showed a high level of planning and coordination.

Story: With Gadhafi out of power, oil prices should fall

The U.S. and other nations have recognized the National Transitional Council as Libya's legitimate government, but the rebel movement consists of Islamists as well as former government insiders and Western-leaning intellectuals, raising concern about whether the factions can unite in a post-Gadhafi Libya.

Story: 'Libya will go down in history as the anti-Iraq'

Brutal crackdown
The uprising against Gadhafi broke out in mid-February, inspired by successful revolts in Egypt and Tunisia.

A brutal regime crackdown quickly transformed the protests into an armed rebellion. Rebels seized Libya's east, setting up the internationally recognized transitional government there, and two pockets in the west, the port city of Misrata and the Nafusa mountain range.

Gadhafi clung to the remaining territory, and for months neither side had been able to break the other.

In early August, however, rebels launched an offensive from the Nafusa Mountains, then fought their way down to the Mediterranean coastal plain, backed by NATO airstrikes, and captured the strategic city of Zawiya.

Story: Can anyone unite Libya if Gadhafi falls?

The rebels' leadership council sent out mobile text messages to Tripoli residents, proclaiming "Long live Free Libya" and urging them to protect public property. Internet service returned to the capital for the first time in six months.

For years, Gadhafi ? the Arab world's longest-ruling, most erratic, most grimly fascinating leader ? was an international pariah, blamed for the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am jumbo jet over Lockerbie, Scotland, that killed 270 people. After years of denial, Libya acknowledged responsibility and agreed to pay up to $10 million to relatives of each victim.

Video: What can the US learn from Libya? (on this page)

Gadhafi also declared that he would dismantle his weapons-of-mass-destruction program, which him back into the international community.

U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News they believed they could learn a great deal about the country's various terrorist activities from a "treasure trove" of material in the Libyan intelligence archives ? not only the Lockerbie bombing, but also its support for the Irish Republican Army, various Palestinian groups and terrorists like Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, the notorious Carlos the Jackal.

So far, the U.S. has spent nearly $890 million on its part of the NATO air campaign, a senior defense official told NBC News on Monday. If operations continue at the same pace until the mandate expires at the end of September, the cost to the U.S. will be more than $1 billion.

Since the beginning of the operation, the U.S. has also sold allies and partners involved in the mission about $222 million worth of ammunition, repair parts, fuel and technical assistance.

The Defense Department has provided about $12.5 million in so-called non-lethal aid: about $1 million worth of ready-to-eat meals, including 120,000 halal MREs approved under Islamic dietary law; medical supplies; tents; and uniforms, boots and personal protective gear.

The defense official said the Pentagon is authorized to provide another $12.5 million in non-lethal aid.

Doctor: Lockerbie bomber may live for years

A Libyan man convicted of murdering 270 people by blowing up a passenger jet could live for several more years, a leading cancer specialist said ? two years after the terminally ill bomber was freed on compassionate grounds because he was close to death.

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi was released from a Scottish jail and flown back to Libya on Aug. 20, 2009, two years ago Saturday, after prison doctors estimated he had only three months to live.

His survival has made him a propaganda asset for embattled Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi ? and an embarrassment for British authorities, who are facing calls to return al-Megrahi to prison if Gadhafi's regime falls.

Al-Megrahi was convicted in 2001 of killing 270 people, most of them American, when New York-bound Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie on Dec. 21, 1988.

Scottish authorities have come under attack from around the world for the decision to release him on compassionate grounds after he had served eight years of a 27-year sentence.

At the time, medical experts advising the Scottish prison service said he was close to death. But Prof. Roger Kirby, a London prostate cancer specialist, said 59-year-old al-Megrahi is likely taking a cutting-edge hormone treatment and "could live much longer, for several more years because of this drug."

'They got it wrong'
Kirby, a consultant urologist at the Prostate Cancer Center in London, said doctors in Scotland would have been unaware of the new hormone-based therapy abiraterone, which was recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is still not available in Europe.

"I remember seeing the shots of him boarding the airplane and coming off in Tripoli and he looked very ill, he was definitely in trouble," Kirby said. "The mistake they made was putting a definite time frame of how long it was going to be, the prognosis of three months or less. They got it wrong.

"He has long outlived the speculative three-month prognosis, and it appears he may continue to do so for a while yet. I strongly suspect that this drug has been central to that."

Video: Lockerbie bomber appears at pro-Gadhafi rally (on this page)

Al-Megrahi, a former Libyan intelligence officer, is the only person convicted over the Lockerbie bombing, Britain's worst terrorist attack.

His release infuriated the families of many Lockerbie victims, who suspected Britain's ulterior motive was to improve relations with oil-rich Libya. Some relatives, however, believe al-Megrahi was wrongly convicted and that evidence points to Iranian-backed Palestinian militants as the perpetrators.

American politicians and British leaders have condemned the decision by Scotland's semiautonomous government to free the convicted bomber.

When Gadhafi's regime showed TV pictures of al-Megrahi at a political rally in Tripoli on July 26, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said it was "a further reminder that a great mistake was made when he was released."

'Fundamentally difficult'
But Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond said he had no regrets. He said he continued to back prison medical staff, who gave the three-month prognosis, and Scottish justice minister Kenny MacAskill, who made the decision to release al-Megrahi.

Salmond said the prognosis was based on the best evidence available, "and no one doubted that this was made on a professional judgment."

"It is fundamentally difficult to estimate the life expectancy of someone with terminal cancer," he said.

With Libyan anti-government forces gaining ground in recent days in their six-month civil war against Gadhafi's Tripoli-based regime, calls have emerged for al-Megrahi to be re-imprisoned if Gadhafi is overthrown.

George Foulkes, a Labour Party member of Britain's House of Lords, said this week that al-Megrahi should be sent back to Britain by a post-Gadhafi government, and there have also been calls from American politicians for the bomber to be extradited to the United States.

Video: Report: British government pushed Lockerbie release (on this page)

Guma El-Gamaty, the British organizer for Libya's opposition, said last month that decision would have to wait "an elected democratic government in Libya."

Until that time, he said, "we are not in a position to give that commitment."

The British government said it was powerless to intervene.

"Megrahi was convicted in a Scottish court under Scottish law," a Foreign Office spokesman said, on condition of anonymity in line with government policy.

"He could be returned under the terms of his release but this is matter for the relevant judicial authorities and it is not something that the British government can interfere with," he added.

Officials in Scotland tasked with overseeing al-Megrahi's parole conditions said they monitored him by regular video link conferences ? and expected to continue to do so.

"We have been with him regularly and recently and he has never breached his parole," said George Barber, a spokesman for East Renfrewshire Council near Glasgow.

"Our contact with him is direct and not through any third party or the Libyan government, so we are operating on the basis that the arrangement will continue regardless of what happens in Libya."

Oil finishes lower for the week (AP)

Oil ended the day below $83 a barrel on Friday, finishing down about 4 percent for the week. That could spell more relief at the gas pump.

The national average for retail gasoline is $3.59 a gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. That's down 10 percent from this year's high of $3.98 on May 5.

Gas could be around $3.25 a gallon by Labor Day and may drop as low as $3.15 by the end of the year, according to Fred Rozell, OPIS retail pricing director.

While gas may be headed lower, it's still taking a big piece out of household income. The median U.S. household income before taxes is almost $50,000 a year. In July families spent about $374 a month on gasoline, or around 9 percent of household income, according to Rozell. For the year, monthly gas expenses average about 8.4 percent, compared with 6.7 percent in 2010.

Benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery fell 12 cents to finish at $82.26 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange after earlier rising as high as $83.55 per barrel. It fell back as stocks sold off Friday afternoon. Oil traders have been watching stocks for signs about the direction of the economy.

In London, Brent crude rose $1.63 to end the day at $108.62 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Benchmark crude is still well above its lowest point in the past year. It finished at $71.63 a barrel last Aug. 24.

PFGBest analyst Phil Flynn thinks traders may have overreacted after oil fell nearly 6 percent Thursday on a batch of negative economic news. He said that traders will remain guarded until there is more clarity about where the economy may be headed.

Crude got some support Friday from a weaker dollar, which hit a new post-World War II low against the Japanese yen. Oil and other commodities are priced in dollars, so a weaker dollar makes them cheaper for traders who use other currencies. Oil lost some ground by the end of the day as the dollar got a little stronger.

In other Nymex trading for September contracts, heating oil rose 2.97 cents to finish at $2.9045 per gallon and gasoline futures added 5.08 cents to end at $2.8412 per gallon. Natural gas rose 4.8 cents to finish at $3.940 per 1,000 cubic feet.
