Our history of eating disorders span a long period of time. In all actuality, it has been happening for as long as someone was there to record it. The reasoning behind this is as unique as the person who is practicing it; some people are doing it intentionally, while others feel that they are getting rid of evil influences in their lives. Whichever way it may unfold, there is a lot of upset surrounding it.
Hundreds of years ago, people would practice anorexia as a personal sacrifice to a God they worshiped. They felt that if they literally starved themselves, it meant their relationship with their Greater Power was pure and without sin. It was their belief that nothing, food included, could nourish them better than their love for their Maker. Doing anything else was a direct slight.
As years passed, people went from worshipping the Gods to worshipping themselves and their own stature. It was the in thing for a woman to don a dress with a tiny waist, wearing a tight corset and giving her the image of being very thin. These women could not eat anything for fear of ruining their tiny waistline. Often times these ladies would pass out cold; not only from lack of oxygen because of being tied in so tight to their dresses, but because they had not had anything to eat in God knows how long.
It has been drummed into young girls minds that the thinner you appear, the more popular you can become. Some girls can look into a mirror, and see a grossly obese person staring back at them; when they themselves are pencil thin to begin with. For many years, this has been a problem with people who have very low self image issues. While there were some eras that welcomed a bigger stature, this particular issue seems to be a contemporary one.
The opposite of self starvation is actually a derivative of the same. Binge and purge, as it is called, is the act of stuffing yourself with as much food as humanely possible and then throwing it back up. This usually happens when someone does not want others to know that they have an issue with food; they give the appearance of eating but they do not keep it down.
This sort of disorder is just as dangerous as not having anything to eat at all. The act of vomiting can damage not only the stomach, but the trachea, larynx, and even the mouth. Because the food does not stay in the stomach long enough for it to be digested, no nutrients get into the body. Additionally, the acid that is formed in the stomach becomes more concentrated, and can quite literally burn the mucous membranes throughout the digestive tract.
Another problem still is those who eat large quantities of food; becoming morbidly obese. This is known to be a partial psychological behavior, but in some cases the other reasons for this weight gain has eluded researchers. It has been said that some cases suggest bodily malfunction, others can prove that it is the lack of proper diet and exercise. Regardless, obesity has been an issue for as long as there has been an abundance of food sources.
Many medical researchers have put the history of eating disorders in a place where it is more centralized for those who need the information. However, there are still a lot of things to be learned if the people who are suffering from it are to be helped. The problem will only progress without it.
