Evaluating kitchen supplies- organize your home series | MondoMom

Now that all the work zones in the kitchen have been established, and now that you know what belongs in each of these zones, it is time to take inventory of everything in your kitchen. Start on one side of your kitchen and empty all the cabinets and drawers and work your way through the whole kitchen. As you start to take things out of the cabinets/drawers, begin to sort the items and create piles on your countertop for each of the kitchen work zones established earlier. As you group items on the countertop, you will be able to visually assess how many different kitchen items you have collected over the years.

Now you have to take an honest look at everything you have and take into account the amount of realistic storage available to you in your kitchen. You may have to downsize the amount of equipment and tools you keep in order to keep your kitchen space functional and effective. Do you own 4 woks? Have you ever used that coffee grinder? Why do you need 3 colanders? Particularly if you have a modestly sized kitchen, you will need to eliminate items that are not used regularly and items that are duplicates or somehow damaged. Do you have broken utensils? Are those herbs expired? Why are you holding onto those chipped bowls? You need to discard items that are no longer useful to you.

Take anything and everything that you haven?t used in the past year and throw it out. Take everything that is broken, damaged or missing a part and throw it out. Take everything that is expired or otherwise inedible and throw it out. Take everything that you have duplicates of and throw it out.

Congratulations! You now have a much more refined and practical collection of kitchen tools/equipment that makes sense for your space.

OCD and Homeschooling | Psych Central

After reading many of John Holt?s books in college and subsequently working with him in Boston, I became committed to the homeschooling movement. This was in the mid-?70s, way before homeschooling became an acceptable alternative to traditional schooling.

When my three children were young, we homeschooled off and on throughout the elementary school years. My son Dan, in particular, loved the freedom of being able to explore his interests as he pleased. He continued homeschooling throughout high school, and received his diploma from a nontraditional school that works with homeschoolers. Always bright and self-motivated, he was truly born to homeschool. He has since graduated college.

His diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder didn?t come until after he graduated high school, and while he had known something was wrong for ?a while,? his father and I didn?t have a clue. So the decision to homeschool, on our part, had nothing to do with the fact that Dan has OCD. From Dan?s point of view, it was how he learned best. He did give high school a try for a few months in ninth grade, but decided to leave so he could ?continue his education.? Whether his OCD played a part in that decision or not, I don?t really know. But I do know that Dan genuinely loves learning, and he and homeschooling were a great fit.

Over the years, I?ve noticed, mostly from talking with people and reading blogs, that a considerable number of children with OCD are homeschooling. This is a totally unscientific observation; I don?t have any statistics. But I do have a question: Why? No doubt everyone has their own reasons, but some possible explanations might include:

• OCD often is associated with above-average intelligence, as well as creativity, and these two attributes do not always mesh well with traditional schooling.
• The school is unable or unwilling to meet the child?s special needs (even though they are legally bound to do so).
• The child refuses to attend school. This might be directly related to the OCD (for example, he or she may believe the school is contaminated), or indirectly related (the child is being bullied because of his or her odd behaviors).
• The child is willing to attend school but parents feel it is advantageous (in reference to OCD) to keep the child home.
• The parents or child believe homeschooling is the best way for this particular child to learn (independent of any issues with OCD).

I believe in homeschooling. While I know it?s not for everyone, it can be a rewarding experience for parents and children who undertake it for the right reasons.

But if your child has left school or has never attended solely because he or she has obsessive-compulsive disorder, it may be a good idea to reevaluate the situation. It?s true that school might be a fervent breeding ground for OCD triggers, but is avoiding it the right thing to do?

To complicate matters more, for those also dealing with social anxiety and perfectionism, school can be torturous. I know it?s easy to say ?avoidance is never the answer,? but when you have a child who is terrified of going to school, what do you do? Sometimes, could it be that avoiding certain situations is the right thing to do?

As with everything related to OCD, there are no easy answers. Parents, therapists, teachers, and students all need to become as educated as possible about the disorder. If it?s decided the child will attend school, the appropriate support network should be put in place. Of course, a support system is also necessary if the child is homeschooling.

Either way, the child must receive proper treatment. Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy, the frontline treatment for OCD, is actually based on facing one?s fears, and is therefore the opposite of avoidance. So the actual location of the battleground (school or home) isn?t so important. What matters is that the war against OCD is faced head-on.

Janet Singer?s son Dan suffered from OCD so severe that he could not even eat. After navigating through a disorienting maze of treatments and programs, Dan made a triumphant recovery. Janet has become an advocate for OCD awareness and wants everyone to know that OCD, no matter how severe, is treatable. There is so much hope for those with this disorder.

Iraq ambassador wants U.S. to pressure Exxon on Kurdistan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration should pressure Exxon Mobil to slow down dealings with Iraqi Kurdistan as they could worsen disputes between Baghdad and the northern province, Iraq's ambassador to the United States said.

Exxon angered Baghdad a year ago by signing an exploration deal with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in the north. The KRG quickly struck similar deals with other global oil companies but the central government in Baghdad deemed all the deals null and void.

Disputed areas between partly autonomous Kurdistan and Baghdad are seen as a potential flashpoint as tensions between regions of Iraq rise.

"We need the American government to exert some pressure on this company," Jabir Habeb, Iraq's ambassador to the United States, told reporters about Exxon after a panel on Iraq's energy potential at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The ambassador said he met with a U.S. energy official recently who told him the U.S. government could not apply a lot of pressure on Exxon because the company makes decisions that benefit its shareholders. Habeb said he told the official the issue could cause political and social problems so it should not be seen as a shareholder issue.

Exxon did not immediately return a request for comment.

The energy company is hoping to exit its flagship West Qurna-1 oilfield project in southern Iraq, diplomatic sources said last week, as profits there are thin.

But analysts have said other oil companies from Russia and elsewhere may not have the know-how and resources to maximize production from the giant Qurna field.

Habeb said Iraq wants Exxon to stay in the south.

"We prefer them to be there and I think the potential of oil in the south of Iraq there's no comparison with the north of Iraq, so I think they understand this fact."

The Paris-based International Energy Agency released a report on Iraq this month that said oil production in the south could rise to 6.4 million barrels per day by 2035 in a mid-level scenario. Output could rise to 1.6 million bpd from the north by the same time period, it said.

The United States of America is a nation full of natural riches, from rain forests, rivers, lakes, oceans, desserts, and whatnot. If sustained, supported, and consolidated properly, these natural resources can turn into economical and industrial behemoths that can serve the people environmentally and financially.

For this reason, the United States Government has developed a slew of agencies that are established solely to render concerns related to the country's natural resources.

The United States Forest Service, one of the agencies in the natural resources sector, is an agency operating under the United States Department of Agriculture that administers the nation's 155 national forests and 20 national grasslands, which encompass 193 million acres of land.

The mission of the agency is "to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations."

The agency is divided into three primary divisions, the National Forest System, State and Private Forestry, and the Research and Development branch. The agency carries out its mission by establishing grant programs such as the Collaborative Forest Restoration Program, which was generally intended to encourage individuals, businesses, groups and other organizations to collaborate on the design, implementation, and monitoring of projects that value local and traditional knowledge, promote healthy and productive forests and watersheds, and build ownership and civic pride.

The National Park Service, on the other hand, is a United States federal agency that manages manages all national parks, various national monuments, and other conservation and historical properties with various title designations.

The grants and programs of the National Park service are all geared towards the achievement of its primary agency mission which is to "provide quality law enforcement to safeguard lives, protect our national treasures and symbols of democracy, and preserve the natural and cultural resources entrusted to us."

Meanwhile, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, operating within the United States Department of the Interior, is the primary agency dedicated to the management of fish, wildlife, and natural habitats.

The mission of the agency, which is "to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people", is carried out by creating several grants and initiatives that serve this purpose.

One of these grant programs is the Evaluation of Mixed-grass Prairie Biotic Communities Project, which was developed to assist with research study design, statistical analyses, data assimilation, and development of written scientific manuscript or report regarding the present situation of mixed-grass prairie biotic communities.

Oil up following Wall Street gains, hope for Spain

BANGKOK (AP) -- A positive day for stock markets and hopes that Spain might be on the verge of requesting a bailout to fix its debt crisis helped push oil prices higher Wednesday.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 16 cents to $92.25 a barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract closed 24 cents higher in New York at $92.09 a barrel on Tuesday.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, was up 1 cent to $114.01 a barrel in London.

Wall Street stocks posted gains Tuesday after blue chip companies including toy maker Mattel and Goldman Sachs posted stronger-than-expected earnings for the third quarter. The enthusiasm carried over to most Asian markets Wednesday.

Analysts also said the new found enthusiasm for stocks also stemmed from Spain, which outsiders have been pressing to accept international aid to help it wade through a tangle of recession, high unemployment and debt.

Spain has been reluctant to ask for help, opting instead to try to fix its problems by instituting economic reforms and slashing government spending.

Other energy futures on the Nymex:

? Heating oil fell 0.9 cent to end at $3.189 a gallon.

? Natural gas gained 0.7 cent to $3.444 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Wholesale gasoline dropped 0.5 cent to $2.797 a gallon.
