Bisping Offers to “Welcome” Diaz to 185 Division

A couple of months ago it looked like Nick Diaz was looking to get get back into the Octagon, after saying his UFC 158 loss to GSP may be his last fight, but nothing came of it. Then, more recently, Dana White relayed that Diaz was just enjoying the fruits of his labor (cash) and that the star just wasn’t interested in fighting currently.

So, while speaking to the media this week to promote UFC 166, Gilbert Melendez was asked about whether he believes his teammate and friend will fight again. Melendez said that he believes Diaz just needs the right kind of “opportunity”, and that further (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“I don’t think he has the desire to be a stepping stone or he doesn’t want to play that role,” Melendez said. “Sometimes you have to come back up the ladder in your career and I don’t think he wants that. I think he wants to fight top-level competition. He doesn’t need to fight just to take it.”

Well, when the story caught Michael Bisping’s attention on Twitter, the outspoken fighter responded by tweeting: “well if Diaz wants a fight at 185 I would happily welcome him to the division.” Then, if that wasn’t interesting enough, Dana White was also asked about the proposed bout on Twitter and stated “I love that fight.” How about that?

Now of course, this doesn’t mean that Bisping-Diaz is going to happen, but on paper, it might have the potential to draw the Stockton fighter back into the cage. Bisping is a big name and polarizing fighter, who is also one of the UFC’s top middleweights. Although Diaz reportedly was offered a fight with Lyoto Machida not long ago, perhaps a fight with “The Count” might be more attractive to him?

Bisping is still on the mend after having surgery recently to repair a detached retina. Although his recovery is going well now, after some scary complications, Bisping believes he won’t be ready to fight before February or March 2014. It will be interesting to see if the UFC in fact approaches Diaz about the fight.
