Nike's 'Vapor Laser Talon' brings 3-D printing to athletic shoes

The latest sneaker from Nike may have a preposterous name, but it's a notable achievement. The Vapor Laser Talon, as it's called, was designed specifically for the 40-yard dash, and was tested and built using a 3-D printer.

At just 5.6 ounces, the shoe is among the lightest out there (shoes like the New Balance Minimus line are as light as 4.4 ounces), but that's not its claim to fame. The "plate," or rigid bottom part in which the cleats and other sole features are embedded, is the first in the sport to be printed.

Nike used a process called Selective Laser Sintering, in which a powerful laser is shone on a plastic or metal powder, fusing it and allowing the surrounding material to be removed. It allowed them to iterate the design over hours instead of days or weeks, making optimization for a single sport or event practical.

In this case, the plate was created with maximum grip on football turf in mind, improving a player's "zero step," the first movements from standing position to running ? in which traction is extremely important.

It's not the first 3-D printed shoe, or even the first to be made for sport (these have a similar goal and use the same process), but it's definitely the first to be made and advertised by a major company like Nike.

No details were shared as to the pricing or availability of the shoe, although it's a safe bet that such a specialized product is unlikely to be found at your local mall just yet.

Sahara Desert dust affects California water supply, study finds

High-altitude dust blown thousands of miles across the Pacific from Asian and African deserts can make it rain and snow in the Sierra Nevada, according to new research that suggests tiny particles from afar play a role in California's water supply.

The study, published Thursday in the online edition of the journal Science, grew out of researchers' questions about two similar Sierra storms in winter 2009. Even though the storm systems carried the same amount of water vapor, one produced 40% more precipitation than the other. When scientists analyzed ground samples of the rain and snow dropped by the wetter storm, they found an abundance of Asian dust.

Two years later, a science team spent days flying through Sierra storm clouds on a government research plane, collecting an array of atmospheric samples at the same time that instruments below in the Tahoe National Forest took ground measurements. The results: When dust and tiny biological particles from halfway around the globe were detected in the clouds swirling above the Sierra peaks, there was more rain and snow.

"There was this sort of magical switch," said Kim Prather, a UC San Diego atmospheric chemist and coauthor of the paper. "The days with dust you see one thing, and the days without dust you see a different thing."

Previous research by one of the paper's 12 authors had shown that windblown mineral dust transported long distances acts as a seed for atmospheric ice that is key to forming a significant amount of precipitation.

But the scientists said the Sierra study is the first direct documentation that dust and biological particles from as far away as the Sahara Desert and the deserts of China and Mongolia can help wring water out of the sky in the Western United States.

"The fact that something happening on another continent in terms of dust generation could influence precipitation patterns in the U.S ? that's a challenging problem," said Marty Ralph, a coauthor and research meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Researchers identified the source of the airborne dust by its chemical fingerprint and by looking at satellite data and numerical weather models that track the global trajectory of air masses. The Sierra range is the first thing the particles hit in California. Whether they have the same effect on precipitation in other West Coast mountains, such as the Cascades, or more interior ranges, such as the Rockies, is unknown.

Ralph was initially dubious that aerosols ? as dust and other atmospheric particles are known ? have much of an impact on whether a cloud gives up water or holds on to it.

But the difference in the output of the 2009 storms "was a bit of a scientific epiphany," he said. "I came into this very skeptical and have come to where I am now, coauthoring a paper that's saying aerosols can have a significant impact."

The next step, he added, is to quantify that precipitation effect.

The Sierra research was part of a three-year field study, called CalWater, that investigated influences on California rain and snow. "I think it has huge implications," said Guido Franco of the California Energy Commission, which funded the program. "It may counteract some of the effects of a warming climate."

Scientists predict that, in general, Earth's wet regions will become wetter with global warming and dry regions will become drier. That could mean more windblown desert dust in the atmosphere and, if the Sierra results bear out, more precipitation in the Northern California mountains that provide the state with roughly a third of its water supply.

Marshall Shepherd, a University of Georgia research meteorologist and president of the American Meteorological Society, was not prepared to go that far. "I don't know if we can make that leap yet and say that [more dust] is going to lead to large global changes in precipitation patterns," Shepherd said. "There are so many other competing factors."

Space race underway to create quantum satellite

In this month's special edition of Physics World, focusing on quantum physics, Thomas Jennewein and Brendon Higgins from the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, Canada, describe how a quantum space race is under way to create the world?s first global quantum-communication network.

The field of quantum communication ? the science of transmitting quantum states from one place to another ? has received significant attention in the last few years owing to the discovery of quantum cryptography.

Quantum cryptography exploits a unique property of single particles, such as photons: they can exist in two separate states ? such as vertically polarized or horizontally polarized ? or something in-between, known as a quantum superposition. Upon measuring the state of a particle you instantly change this state, meaning an encryption key made of photons can be passed between two parties safe in the knowledge that if an eavesdropper intercepts it, this would be noticed.

Quantum cryptography has been described as a way of creating 'unbreakable' messages and has attracted the attention of major technology companies, governments, banks and other security-focused clients.

The transmission of encryption keys over long distances still remains a significant challenge for scientists, however, as the intensity of signals tends to weaken as they travel further because photons get absorbed or scattered off molecules.

Up until now, the furthest that quantum-communication signals have been sent is a few hundred kilometres, which would realistically enable communication between just one or two cities.

There is one place, however, where scattering doesn't appear to happen empty space. Jennewein and Higgins lead just one of several teams around the world looking to take advantage of this by pursuing the concept of a quantum satellite.

A signal travelling from a ground station on Earth to a satellite would spend most of its time in the empty vacuum of space ? rather than in Earth?s atmosphere, which is crowded with gas molecules ? so the signal would travel a lot further without weakening.

A satellite orbiting at around 32000 km above Earth would act as a kind of relay between two ground stations in a way that allows them to establish a secure link by sharing an encryption key made of photons.

In addition to the basic mass and power of the satellite itself, the team led by Jennewein and Higgins has been studying the overall design features of the satellite and ground stations and has emphasized the need for them both to be precisely aligned so they can be certain that what they are measuring correctly corresponds to the photons that are prepared.

With the prospect of global-scale quantum communications and fundamental quantum science within new, unexplored regimes, the next few years are sure to be exciting,? Jennewein and Higgins write.

In the media world, it?s been a bad time for anthropologists and anthropology.? First, the Darth Vader of American politics, the incomparable Governor Rick Scott publicly stated that anthropology, his daughter?s undergraduate major, was a subject without value. Governor Scott?s demonstration of boastful ignorance sparked an outcry from anthropologists who fought back by presenting to the media many powerful examples of the economic utility of anthropological study and practice.? That rebuttal hasn?t seemed to have changed media or public perception of Margaret Mead?s profession.? Second, Kiplinger and Forbes, two business publications, par excellence, rated anthropology as the worst undergraduate major for getting a job. Taking their cue from these ?facts? the triumphant trio of prudent governors, Rick Scott, Scott Walker and Rick Perry, now want to slash wasteful higher education funds for programs of study that don?t prepare students for jobs in the real world. If those budget cuts weaken pesky disciplines, like anthropology and sociology, which produce critical thinkers and political activists, so much the better!

These are hard times in the humanities and social sciences, times made much worse ? at least in the world of the media ? by the latest anthropological flare-up over the publication of Napoleon Chagnon?s new memoir, Noble Savages.? If nothing else, Chagnon is a master of self-publicity. He has produced a work tailor-made for the contemporary media. In this tale, he is a heroic figure and his detractors, who don?t understand him or the strictures of science, are villains. The perceptual brilliance of Chagnon?s tactic is refracted in Emily Eakin?s New York Times Magazine story, ?How Napoleon Chagnon Became our Most Controversial Anthropologist. ? Not mentioning the fact that most contemporary anthropologists don?t give a hoot about what Professor Chagnon is doing, Eakin begins her piece with an evocation of a mythically brave anthropologist who knows how to deal with the privations of the jungle and the ?primitive? natives who live there.?

Among the hazards Napoleon Chagnon encountered in the Venezuelan jungle were a jaguar that would have mauled him had it not become confused by his mosquito net and a 15-foot anaconda that lunged from a stream over which he bent to drink. There were also hairy black spiders, rats that clambered up and down his hammock ropes and a trio of Yanomami tribesmen who tried to smash his skull with an ax while he slept. (The men abandoned their plan when they realized that Chagnon, a light sleeper, kept a loaded shotgun within arm?s reach.) These are impressive adversaries??Indiana Jones had nothing on me,? is how Chagnon puts it?but by far his most tenacious foes have been members of his own profession.

Eakin goes on to suggest that Chagnon ?may be this country?s best known living anthropologist; he is certainly its most maligned.? To make matters even more mythical, the essay features a recent photo of Chagnon, wearing an Indiana Jones fedora, but looking more like an anthropological curmudgeon than Steven Spielberg?s swashbuckling archeologist.? These images are fodder for a hungry media that delights in tales of heroism, primitivism, lost tribes and ?fierce? Neolithic people.? Chagnon?s tale quenches our collective thirst for adventure among the ?stinking brutes,? who want to smash your skull in with an ax.

The problem for Chagnon and for anthropology is that although these stereotypes of heroic anthropologists and ?primitives? are painfully persistent, they have become profoundly anachronistic.?

There are no more ?lost tribes,? no more missing links in the evolutionary chain.? Even the Yanamano can no longer escape the long reach of transnational global networks.?

Even so, Chagnon wants to revive the past and cleanse his image. Consider Elizabeth Povinelli?s review of Noble Savages, also published in the February 15 edition of The New York Times.? Writing of the pain and suffering of the Yanamano, which was brought on in some measure through contact with of American (social) scientists, she writes:

?Does their pain and grief matter less even if we believe, as he seems to, that they were brutal Neolithic remnants in a land that time forgot? For him, the ?burly, naked, sweaty, hideous? Yanamamo stink and produce enormous amounts of ?dark green snot.?? They keep ?vicious, underfed growling dogs,? engage in brutal ?club fights? and ? God forbid! ? defecate in the bush. By the time the reader makes it to the sections on the Yanamano?s political organization, migration patterns and sexual practices, the slant of the argument is evident: given their hideous society, understanding the real disaster that struck these people matters less than rehabilitating Chagnon?s soiled image.

Other anthropologists have voiced their concern. Once again the anthropological establishment has been forced to defend the besmirched media image of anthropologists and anthropology.? In a letter to the editor of The New York Times, American Anthropological Association President Leith Mullings critiques Ms. Eakin?s article as profoundly inaccurate. In so doing she defends a discipline that long ago put to rest the kinds of issues that Professor Chagnon has revived.

I?m afraid that these protestations will have little impact on the public perception of anthropology or, for that matter, the social sciences and humanities. For the moment, these counter-arguments can?t compete with the deeply mythical texture of the life and times of Napoleon Chagnon.

In the sweep of time, though, Chagnon?s work is but a blip on the screen.? In the nanosecond reality of the media universe, Chagnon?s ideas and struggles will quickly revert back to what they are:? ?very old news.??

That scholarship produces results that are politically threatening to men like Rick Scott, Scott Walker and Rick Perry.? That?s why they?re slashing higher education budgets. What better way to undermine anthropology, sociology, and the humanities and protect their economic and political interests?

Now there?s a story worthy of media attention.

The heart of Richard the Lionheart was preserved with mercury, mint and frankincense, among other sweet-smelling plants, a new study finds.

The study is the first biochemical look at the heart of Richard I, who died in 1199. As was common practice at the time, the king's heartwas removed and mummified separately from the rest of his body. It rested in a reliquary at Notre Dame in Rouen for centuries before its rediscovery in 1838.

Now, for the first time, the chemical composition of the substances used to preserve the heart has been revealed. These substances were directly inspired by biblical texts, said study leader Philippe Charlier of University Hospital R. Poincar?.

"The aim was to approach the odor of sanctity," Charlier told LiveScience.

The life and death of Richard I
Richard I of England began his rule in 1189. He spent two years in captivity in Europe, much of that time being held for ransom by the Holy Roman Emperor. Later, the tale of Richard I's ransom would be folded into folk tales about Robin Hood, casting Richard I as a benevolent absent monarch and his brother John as a tax-happy usurper.

(Richard I came centuries before Richard III, the English monarch whose bones were discovered in a Leicester parking lot in September 2012. Richard III died in 1485.)

On March 25, 1199, years after the kidnapping, Richard sustained a crossbow wound in Chalus, France, and died 12 days later of gangrene. His abdominal organs were removed and interred in Chalus, while his body went to rest at Fontevraud Abbey in France. His heart was embalmed and placed in its own casket and taken to Notre Dame in Rouen. [The 10 Weirdest Ways We Deal With the Dead]

This division of the body was used to symbolize and mark Richard I's territory, Charlier said. However, no ancient texts remain to record how the embalming process was done.

The heart rested in Rouen until July 1838, when a local historian discovered a lead box inscribed, "Here is the heart of Richard, King of England." The heart itself had been reduced to dust in the preceding centuries; all that the box contained was a brownish-white powder.

Spiritual and practical
It was this powder that Charlier and his colleagues tested. They found a variety of compounds, including traces of the proteins found in human heart muscle. They also observed tiny fragments of linen, suggesting that the heart was wrapped before placement in the box.

Some metal compounds, including lead and tin, likely seeped into the powder from the lead box. Others were probably used in the embalming process. In particular, the researchers detected mercury, which has been found in other medieval burials and was probably used as an embalming agent.

The analysis also turned up pollen from a variety of plants: myrtle, daisy, mint, pine, oak, poplar, plantain and bellflower. Some of these, including poplar and bellflower, would have been blooming in April when Richard the Lionheart died; their pollen may have simply settled out of the air into the casket.

Other plants were probably used to preserve the heart. Myrtle, daisy and mint would not have been in bloom at the time, the researchers found, and probably would have been part of the embalming process. Frankincense, a tree resin, would also have been useful for both its preservation and its symbolic properties.

"This symbolic substance appeared at both extremities of the Christ life," the researchers wrote online Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports. "Presented by the Biblical Magi at His birth, and used during His external embalming after the Passion."

Preserving the heart would have been important, because the journey to Rouen from Chalus was about 330 miles (530 kilometers), the researchers wrote. But Richard I's contemporaries may have also seen the process as one of "theological transformation," Charlier said.

Indeed, contemporary wisdom seems to have held that Richard I needed all the spiritual help he could get. In the 1200s, the bishop of Rochester announced that the king had only made it to heaven in 1232, having spent the intervening 33 years in purgatory, repenting his Earthly sins.

Leaders with nowhere to grow are blind, self-indulgent fools. They?re the walking dead.

I spent most of my early leadership years believing I was someone I?wasn?t. I felt smarter and more skilled than I actually was. Others were the problem, not me. I repeated ineffective behaviors because I was ?right.?

Those who focus on changing others while neglecting their own growth, become the walking dead.

Unleash growth by feeling dissatisfaction with your current leadership skills. Leaders who?aren?t?developing leadership skills believe?they?ve?arrived. Sound dangerous? ?It?s worse than dangerous; it?s zombie land.

Dissatisfaction with others is easy.
Dissatisfaction with self, stings.

Forget balance, it?s for weaklings and milquetoasts. Jump overboard when it comes to growing your leadership skills.

  1. Observe yourself. Imagine you?re floating in the corner of your office invisibly watching. Monitor interactions. Observe responses from others. Are you inspiring?
  2. Serve others so others can serve others. Growth happens when you help others grow. Enabling ?others to serve others? requires humility. Share your skills. Provide opportunities for others, don?t take them for yourself. ?Serving others so they can serve others? means helping them do things you easily do.
  3. Take personal assessments. My leadership coach, Bob Hancox, recently gave me the ProD Leadership assessment. I recommend it.
  4. Grow content with discontent. Growth is on the other side of average. Mediocre leaders fear letting go of average.
  5. Personally own your aspirations for exponential impact. Just say it! Don?t hang your head in false humility. Tell someone you want to matter. Embrace your ache for meaning, don?t snuff it out.

Life always means growth. What?isn?t?growing is dead.
