Ex-Patriots, Notre Dame coach pleads guilty in standoff

SOUTH BEND, Ind. ? Former Notre Dame assistant football coach Corwin Brown has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to confinement and domestic battery charges in return for prosecutors agreeing to drop a more serious confinement charge.

The plea agreement calls for a four-year sentence, but also states prosecutors will not oppose a defense recommendation the sentence be suspended and Brown be placed on probation. St. Joseph County Judge Jane Woodward Miller said Thursday she will decide Aug. 21 whether to accept the deal.

She told the 42-year-old Brown he could face up to six years in prison.

Brown is accused of striking his wife and holding her hostage during a standoff. The hearing was interrupted for 14 minutes after Brown initially told Miller he didn?t stop his wife from leaving the house.
